When one day-trades, fundamentals probably don't matter, so it's possible for traders to make money on a fundamentally bad company. But IINM a cardinal rule of day trading is to close all positions by the end of each trading day.

You just  don't believe in swing trading because bad things can happen?

Bad things can happen to any stock. But as he mentioned, he believes the odds for this stock were worse than gambling in a casino. Which means that bad things happen most of the time.

I am not a trader, I am an investor. That being said, when I see potential for a trade (as I did with EUO on the days leading up to Brexit) I might take a position with my eyes on a trade.

Unlike day trading, swing trading should involve some fundamental analysis, as the underlying risks are higher than day trading due to overnight holding of positions. One has to look at fundamental reasons and some longer trends, set stops, or trailing stops, and like all traders anticipate losses (the key to successful trading is winning more than losing).

I would imagine that swing trading what has become a penny stock with deteriorating fundamentals is too risky (to say the least - which is why I used the Verrukt analogy).

If  the CEO  kept his mouth shut this  would have  easily been 2.6 based on the earnings alone.

What makes you say that? Because someone would manipulate the stock up?

Reported earnings are HISTORY.

Stock ownership represents a claim on FUTURE earnings.

If CEO would keep his mouth shut about something like the following paragraph he could have ended up behind bars!

Quote
"Given the ongoing distressed market environment as well as the consensus view that a recovery may not occur for several years, we have engaged financial and legal advisors to assess the viability of our capital structure and alternatives that may be available to pursue. In the recent period, we have been approached by several of our debt holders who have in certain cases also retained legal counsel and financial advisors."

The writing was on the wall for this kind of issue, which is why I said that odds are worse than Atlantic City.

B.H. that is what trading is about. Making more winning trades than losing trades.

He's not saying he should've lied. The fact is the EPS were amazing and the stock would've gained 20%(look at previous earnings how the stock reacted) however the fact is they discussed a serious debt issue and that's why the stock crashed.

The serious issues were there, regardless of whether he discusses them or not. He is legally obligated to disclose any material information.

As I said above, reported earnings are meaningless regarding current stock price. The only thing that matters regarding the current stock price is the enterprise value, which is highly affected by future earnings.

If you know how accounting works, it's not that hard to make one quarter, or even a few quarters look good from an earnings perspective, even when things aren't going so good (which is why banks were allowed to ignore "mark to market" on their loan portfolios back in 2008 - if they weren't allowed to do that, we would have had a much greater meltdown).
