Although I think — and all indicators show — that it’s going lower in the short term, I would never short the stock (or any stock) especially at these levels, but would definitely buy for the long term here, and average down.

He didn’t ask about short term trading, he asked about long term buying, where averaging down is the way to go, it doesn’t mean you “were wrong in the first place”, it merely means that you didn’t do the impossible and time the bottom but you get another chance to get your average price down for the long term.

That's not a correct statement. Assuming your number is correct, then if you invested $1,000 in 2000, you would have seen $1,670 in returns, and your principal would be worth $1,000.

That’s not how it works. Dividend reinvesting increases your principal invested. Look at yahoo finance, historical prices and put in 01/03/00 it has an adjusted closing price of 21.82 on that day which accounts for all stock splits and dividends from that point. Currently with a market price of 60+ it’s not just now to breakeven, it’s well ahead of that point.
