I guess I can rephrase. Thinking about gambling $1000 or $1500 by buying mutual funds with the intention of holding long term I am not so knowledgeable About the market but my belief/gamble is that long-term a fund will increase in value. I realize should not matter when I buy if this is true but still feels better to buy when the market down even if it may continue to fall

That might be true when you personally feel that there's absolutely no hope for the market. I suggest you carefully read this article (which has been published many times over).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

No need to rephrase.

Putting $1500 in an ETF like the SPY for the long term is no gamble.

Betting that these 500 will go up over time without the proper knowledge as to what they’re doing/finances are, isn’t the same as betting on one particular company, you’re betting on the American economy — long term, safe bet, just buy it.

If one doesn't know or understand what they're doing, it is no better than a gamble.

Sure, in the long term it will go up, the question is what is defined as the long term, and what will happen in the interim. Could a $1,500 investment into SPY today be worth less than $1,000 at any point in the future? How would the investor react if that would happen? What are the expectations? Are we trying to time the market with a one time shot? Will we try to time the market with a one time withdrawal?

Stock prices rise based on two factors: Earnings growth, and P/E expansion. If one were to invest in SPY, I would say one should first look at http://www.multpl.com/ and probably http://www.multpl.com/shiller-pe/ in order to gain some good perspective as to the price being paid.

In the short run, these valuations are attractive. Longer run, it’s a little tougher to see,” Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at Oakbrook Investments, said by phone. “At some point the economy is going to slow. We will have higher interest rates to go along with that, and that’s going to hurt valuations.”

Very oversold like most stocks, but no buy signal yet. I'll stay on the side for now. The S&P 500 futures are trading 20 more points down after hours, currently 2485, as I said before breaking down below 2600 can lead to an acceleration on the downside.

Here is a daily chart for CHK, strong downtrend since October, see white line with arrow, no signs of any reversal yet.  https://www.tradingview.com/x/RbLntsb8/

Finally reinitiated a position in GOOG and SQ on Friday after selling them a few years ago for way to cheap, hope it goes down more so I can build it up, especially hoping SQ goes down as the valuation is still a bit to pricey but couldn’t resist starting a position in it as it’s down nearly 50% from its ATH

Just need some good news and fed to come out with no hikes in 2019. Everything has been so negative lately. Any traders became long term holders...

For a trader to become a long term holder is a disaster,I always chose a stop and stick to it, hard to tell when this downtrend will reverse, this market is up almost x 5 times from the 2009 lows, and is currently in a bear market since all indices dropped by over 20%, I shorted the S&P futures once it broke 2600 which was the only support there, the drop was fast and severe, I covered half the position yesterday.

Is it a buy now ? Or just wait until the trend goes higher even if it means potentially getting in a little late..

I'll wait for a reversal, a test of the low and then use a stop , this way I'll keep losses small, always can re enter again. When buying in a downtrend we never know how much lower prices will go ,neither how long will the bear market last.  Bear markets will have strong up days to get new buyers in , and then the downtrend continues .

Not to diminish todays’ record setting gain, but guess which year held the record for the biggest single day gain until today? 2008.

Im not comparing the two, in fact I’m actually buying this market, just putting things in perspective.
