I did this a few years ago but I don't remember exactly how.

IIRC when you port out the number it cancels the line but you have a certain amount of time to call Verizon and get the line reinstated - and at that time you request them to put a new number on the line.

ETA: I had more then 1 line on the account so porting out one number didn't close the account.
Do you only have one line on the account?

There are 2 lines but want to port both of them.

Could I do one and then the other?

If it would work, would they then let me port a number in?

Basically, have an unlimited Verizon plan with 2 lines which want to keep but switch the 2 numbers to Sprint and port in 2 new numbers.

I would call up VZW and ask them to start a new line with the old number, while assigning the old line a new number.

Interesting.

Just a add a dumb phone line, switch the number and then port it which would effectively cancel that line.

Question is, if I switch the original number to the dumb phone will they let me port in a number as the new number?

might be easier to port it in as a new #, then change the numbers within the acct. BTW I know Cellcom in Israel had a process called הצלבה which swapped #s without affecting any other aspect of the accounts

Anyone know if Verizon allows switching numbers on lines in one account?

I am interested in moving my child's verizon number to Google Voice and then adding to my Verizon acct. my son in law's account which isn't currently with us. I want to do this to save my daughter's number (she made aliyah) but don't want Verizon to keep charging me monthly for her service that she isnt using. Any idea how to do this without incurring the charge?

And that's all for Verizon.
Any experience with Sprint?

Yes. Just call and tell them what you want to do. They will refund the early termination fee for the closed line which you ported, and reopen it with a new number.

That's why was thinking, add 2 dumb lines, switch the numbers from the smart phones to the dumb phones and port those numbers.

The only think I haven't figured is if they'll allow switching numbers on lines within one plan.

My experience with Sprint, as I looked into this once.

As soon as you port out the number the account gets closed and you will be charged, but you can call back and try and get it reopend with a new number. Be careful of opening a new dummy line etc. as there is no such thing as opening a new line without a 2 year commitment.

IIRC once you reopen there is no remorse period and you are basically signing for 2 years upon reopening.

IIRC new lines do have a remorse period before you commit for 2 years.
