my (almost) free blackberry
« on: October 10, 2012, 08:36:58 PM »
could be this is basics for some, but it really helped a poshuter yid like me, so I'm sharing.

Find someone who has AT&T and is planning staying with them (easy to find some older person not into fancy phones) - and follow these steps:
- call at&t to block data on his plan
- call at&t to request an upgrade (there is a $30 fee, but some guys told me they got it waived) to the smartphone of your choice.
- once you get the phone, turn it on and use it (this way it registers that your got it).
- call at&t to get the unlock code (tell them your travelling to Israel) and unlock the blackberry (search online for instructions).
- put the at&t sim back into the old phone, call at&t and tell them your not using the blackberry for now
----you won't get charged not once for the data, cuz it was blocked and never reopened, so you wont ever get the data service fee!
use your new smartphone and use it with any other SIM of your choice  :)
(or you could just use h2o wiithout having to unlock).

I have friends who never even put their At&T sim into the smartphone, and at&t never got back to them either. But the above steps are the ones I took.

Nice- I am assuming that an upgrade to a smartphone on ATT requires a data plan for the contract?? Like T-Mobile?

Any tricks for T-Mobile??

@OP, thanks!

Do you have full internet, or just BIS (email/BBM)?

I'm lost how this works.

Why would the BB work with AT&T service if you have a different SIM card in the phone?

Basically:
1.- He is taking someones upgrade.
2.-That person does not get charged smartphone fee since data is blocke.

And here I was (and probably others too) thinking he's getting free BB service. Could the OP please clarify if he's talking about device or svc.?

If you read his post slowly you'll see that he wrote that you can insert another sim (and obviously be charged!).

U can unlock a bberry for 1$ on eBay. Why is it so special to use someone's upgrade and then use the phone elsewhere?

he got a free phone- which is not such a big deal bec he used someones upgrade- his "chidush" is the turniing off the data so he does not get charged for a data plan.
