SA is great. To do it right will cost you a pretty penny by the safaris and or Victoria Falls

like you said it can be done on points and cheaply for the most part
You can stay in points hotels even near the game reserves
There are cheap options that include good game drives as well

Have yet to find any good  cheap  options for accommodations in kruger or game Reserves.

Would look for one 1) in the park 2) with game drives and trackers.

I really prefer a warm weather place.  Is there anything with out zika?
