I was just there yesterday. Next door there is some bagel shop. Has a hechsher never saw it before. In the Actual place of the former shalom chai there is a three inch later of dust on the interior. If someone is expecting to move in soon, a lot needs to be done. Looked like it hadn't been touched in a loooooong time.

I live on the LES...
According to the word on  the street - the new cafe is happening although when it will happen is another question...
With regard to the bagel shop - Kossars - the hechsher is Rabbi Fishelis - R' Dovid Feinstein's son in law - and is considered a very reliable hechsher in our neighborhood.

Man, I gotta come to you for a Shabbos once
would be honored :), but u gotta bring a good bottle. One other thing that really irked me was how the bartender at Mike's licked the little mixing stick before throwing it out after serving a hot toddy. on the one hand, i'm all against wasting booze, but it really was unprofessional.

Bartenders will often do that to taste it and make sure the drink is right.
I would guess its standard practice

my bad, don't have much experience with mixed drinks (I only get beer and an occasional jack and coke). Just seemed a lil funny not knowing.

Little frustrating that Mike's has been telling people since they opened in mid aug, that they'd be opening shortly for lunch time, but now it seems def not before Jan. I know it's tough to get a staff for diff hours but what could possibly be taking so long? I guess he's making more than enough on Dinner to be scrambling to open for lunch.

Was surprised how many other peeps also felt mikes was overrated, but not opening for lunch in their location is just stupid, as they would have a pretty good crowd.
As an aside, went to RC for lunch again and had such a better meal with the mrs for less than half the price. Their 40 lunch prix fixe is really the best value in haute kosher, and we esp love their creme brûlée with sugar cookies and raspberry sorbet. Mike's dessert menu was so boring, we settled for hot chocolate and coffee instead of actual dessert.

I'll agree the dessert options leave much to be desired, but to compare the heavenly duck gnocchi to your "MIL's kreplach" is probably criminal in at least some states... unless you're MIL is a culinary savant.

Hard to top an RC lunch of short rib tacos, mushroom porcini soup, and steak sandwich.  Though it's a fortune to spend on lunch.

Don't care for the burger on the prix fixe at all.

Agree, the burger is never worth it. unfortunately they took off the steak sandwich. but they have rotating gourmet dishes that are all good (i had the linguini with meatballs, which was not amazing but very good). Not really a fortune if you have the time at lunch and want to go out early. we came at 2 (kitchen closes 230) and had a great time with great food (and were stuffed on 3 courses) for a total of $105 including above 20% tip.

MIL is not, but she is really into old world tastes like european fricasse (and im not). Maybe i just hate oldy stuff but the flavor was all wrong in my mind, though it seems most people here like/love it.

The prix fixe is lame without the phenomenal steak sandwich.

not lame, just not phenomenal. u still get a great app (my favs are porcini mushroom soup and king salmon) and creme brulee (one of the best desserts at a kosher restaurant, period) plus a very decent main, i enjoyed my large bowl of spaghetti and good meatballs, and mrs loved the arctic char, can also get very good ahi tuna salad. for 40 that is a lot of gourmet kosher food, in prob the prettiest modern kosher restaurant in NYC, equals always a happy meal (in my experience).
