Background on Hawaiian Islands
You've probably heard of Honolulu. That's the state capital and is located on island of Oahu, the main island with the largest airport. Honolulu hosts the famous Waikiki Beach and if you look at pictures, it looks like Miami. One long beach with a strip of hotels. Most DDFers say to go to one of the other 3 main islands which are less touristy and the hotels are more spread out. In no particular order, the other islands are Maui, Kauai and Hawaii (yes, that's the name of one of the islands. It's also known as The Big Island - confusing because Big Island sounds like it's the "Main Island", but Oahu is the main island). Direct flights from NYC only go to HNL. You can get direct flights from other cities (LAX, SFO, OAK, SJC, SAN, DEN, DFW, PHX, SEA, ORD as examples) to the other islands. Hawaii is amazing - have fun! The main airport codes are:
Oahu: HNL
Maui: OGG
Kauai: LIH
The Big Island: KOA, ITO (2 airports on 2 different sides of the island)

Interisland flights:
Hawaiian is the main interisland carrier and flies HNL, LIH, OGG, KOA, and ITO. They have countless flights each day and are nearly always on time - often even early. Never book a tight connection hoping that the interisland flight will be delayed.

Go and Island Air fly from HNL. Mokulele flies from HNL and KOA, as well as to Kapalua (JHM), Hana (HNM), Molokai (MKK), Lanai (LNY), and Waimea-Kohala (MUE) on the Big Island. Hawaiian's subsidiary Ohana flies HNL to MKK and LNY.

You can also use 5k AA, 6k UA or 7.5k HA miles each way to fly interisland. You can use 15k DL pesos for a RT interisland. United allows a free stopover on a round-trip, so for instance you can fly HNL-LIH-OGG-HNL for just 12K miles.
HA has several tiers, similar to DL, the lowest tier is the only one that's available using partner miles, but with HA miles you can purchase tickets that are otherwise unavailable for additional miles.

@Yehuda's thoughts on deciding between Kauai and Maui:
Here's a list of the main activities on both islands. Decide what interests you, and then you'll know where to go.

Kauai has what many say to be one of the best hikes in the world - Kalalau Trail. Most people will only do the first part, but it's still very highly regarded. The views atop Waimea Canyon are breathtaking, yet Maui also has breathtaking views at Haleakala. Kauai also has some supposedly awesome off-roading on Miloli'i Ridge Road. Sunset at the 12-mile long Polihale Beach is supposed to be quite the sunset. A helicopter tour of Kauai is generally said to be much better than a heli tour of Maui. If the water is calm, Queen's Bath, which is a natural pool in the ocean you can swim in that's protected from the ocean's force by hardened lava, is SICK, but Maui has the same thing by the Olivine Pools. Kayaking down the Wailua River to "Secret Falls" is supposed to be great as well. Of course, the luxurious, tropical amazingness of the Grand Hyatt Kauai is a huge boost for Kauai, except for its beach, but the great Po'ipu Beach is 5 minutes away.

Maui has the Road to Hana, which is an incredible drive through what feels like a rainforest with tons of opportunities to take small hikes to waterfalls and pools. It's just wow wow wow. Sunrise at the top Haleakala is not to be missed. A boat trip to snorkel by Molokini Crater offers what is supposedly some of the best snorkeling visibility in the world. Warren & Annabelle's Magic Show is supposed to be a great night out. The hotels are also magical, perhaps to a lesser degree than GHK, but the beaches by the main hotels are a big plus over GHK's beach. EDIT: The Grand Wailea in Maui is a gorgeous hotel that rivals the GHK (and its lazy river actually moves as opposed to GHK's ). Add in the fact that its beach (Wailea Beach) is swimmable and doesn't require the albeit short drive to Po'ipu Beach that the GHK does, I'm not sure that the GHK should be a reason enough to tip the scales in favor of Kauai over Maui anymore.

So, pick the types of activities you'd want to do and then you'll have your island. I personally liked Maui better mostly because of the Road to Hana, but to be fair, I did miss out on the Kalalau Trail in Kauai due to weather.

He should not go on a nice vacation with his entire family because some things his kids enjoy can also be found close to home? Oh Please.
No reason to shlep to Hawaii for that.
If your kids won't enjoy the waterfalls, scenery, drives and hikes, plus their not old enough to do any of the water activities, then pray tell why are you going to Hawaii ?

Okay. I guess what I thought is simple turns out to be not so simple. Here I come.

I WANT TO GO TO HAWAII after seeing Dan/SF and other talking so highly about the nature over there. I want to check it out. Now as Ergel did. I would also take out a house with a pool so we could do swimming with kids, go to beaches and do some Hawaii stuff. But what I added is that my son loves rides etc and he would kill me if we finally go away and we don't take him to rides. Understand?
You can say what you think when you think what you say.

Maybe he can get himself a babysitter for a day or 2 and do some of his own activities?

Not everyone here goes to a place and goes through a 40 page TR worth posting about. Doesn't mean it wasn't worth it for them to go there and does not mean that they couldn't have a great time and enjoy Hawaii.

There are basically only 2 real options for the psak you'll get regarding Hawaii. Either you go by the 2-1 majority that say the locals' Saturday is Shabbos in Hawaii, or you try to be mekayem the third shita and keep 2 days l'chumrah (ie almost no one will hold to only do Shabbos on the locals' Friday alone). If the psak is the latter, you'll need to get the details of how you keep those 2 days from the Rov as well.
There's also a popular p'sak to not be in Hawaii at all from sundown Thursday until Motzai Shabbos.

Somebody actually holds that way in psak, or they just don't trust the asker to keep Friday properly?

Yes... There are many people on DDF that have only stayed in Hawaii from Sun-Thurs afternoon because of Psakim not to be there for Shabbos.

Kids couldn't care less about a sunset.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Maybe it's just semantics, but I don't think that's psak. That's more of an eitzah, maybe somewhat in the realm of hashkafa. For example, my Rov told me to leave before Thursday night, and I planned my trip accordingly. But I also know that he told another of his mispalelim (also a DDF'er) who needed to be in Hawaii over Shabbos for a work/school that he could go, and just keep Shabbos on Saturday. This came in handy, as we ended up getting delayed (okay - missing our flight), and leaving Thursday night. I later confirmed with my Rov that it was okay to do so.

ETA: What I'm saying is that a 'psak' not to stay past Thursday night is really saying not to get into the safek, rather than paskening the actual shaila itself.

Looking to go with my kids to Hawaii In the summer 3 kids under the age of 6 so basically won't do much activities just mainly chill by the beach
Which island would be better and has more activities doable with kids Maui or Kauai?
Did already once Kauai but didn't stay at the GHK, is it worth returning to Kauai just for the GHK or should I rather do Maui and stay at the HR Maui (hopefully with a DSU)?

I would try Maui. I was there in December and thought it was a good balance for children and adults. The recent renovation to the HR looked very nice. I stayed in the adjacent Residence for the week but mostly used the HR facilities with our young one. Maui also has a ton of easily accessible beautiful beaches in the area of Ka'anapali and beyond.

The island of Miami is my choice for just chilling by a beach. Seriously, but all jokes aside. Ok fine that was a joke, but still kinda serious.

Anyway, they say you can stay at the GHK, never leave the hotel, and have a great vacation. I guess that would be worthwhile to consider if you're going with kids and not so interested in activities. The front of the lagoon is very shallow, so I would imagine kids would have a blast in it. OTOH, Maui does have an aquarium, which is something kids might enjoy. Then again, I imagine Miami has an aquarium, too.  ::) :P

Planning on going in the summer and Miami is hot and humid
And secondly because I have kids does that mean that I'm stuck to only miami or SD as a bonus, lot's of ddfers traveled all over with kids and had a grand time

I could make a aquarium in my sink at home too  :P

Both islands have tons of things to do, and people fly around the world to do things with their kids. You had specifically said you basically won't do many activities, just chill by the beach. IMO, THAT is not worth traveling all the way to Hawaii for.

Frum couple in Hawaii
« Reply #1819 on: April 26, 2016, 09:57:36 PM »
I'm thinking of taking my wife to Hawaii for our anniversary in December and I would love some help please!
  • What can a frum couple do and see in Hawaii?
  • We will only be able to get away from the kids for a few days, where should we go?
  • Which miles should I be working on for flights and hotels?
  • What deals should I be looking out for?
  • Any other ideas?
This will be our first big trip together so I'm pretty rusty.

Thank you
