SPG Points Expire

Warning to all SPG members: Points expire after 12 months of inactivity, they did just put in a request to reinstate it for me, but I just wanted to let everyone know of this.

(especially important to those who manage multiple accounts for different family members, and may not use one account for a while)

This is nothing new, almost all points and miles expire and you have to maintain activity to keep them active.
With SPG this is much much easier than with airlines as you can just transfer points back and forth for free to maintain activity.

 or make a res for afree night and then later cancel it and redeposit the pts, so I was told by a CSR the other week, but make sure before doing it this way

That would work as well, just make sure before booking that you are not within the penalty cancellation period for the hotel.

 true but be very careful, as it seems its only days away for CO & UA to announce a Merge into 1 Airline. UA has an 18 month period , what will be once they are 1 company is anyones guess

Between family members' Starwood accounts.

Yes, as long as the listed home address is the same on both accounts.

if i keep on adding points to my account from my amex starwood card is that called activity or do i still need to do something like make a reservation and cancel?

 the info I posted above turns out not to be teh case, theres 3 ways to keep ones pts from Expiring

 1 a stay at a *W Hotel

 2 purchasing something from a *W hotel that is owne dby teh Hotel, say a meal or a drink at teh bar must give in your *W#


 3 getting pts for having used your Amex SPG CC

thats it anything else is NOT considered activity that will prolong your acct as an active acct

 nope, I also thought so and used pts from my Moms acct for my BRU C&P but leanrt in time that it was Only 1 of the 3 I listed that would do the trick.

I did a Search on FT and sure enough William said the samething 1 of 3 and only those 3 ways

 depends when they were KOed but they usually will give them back if you have a Stay credited , but some times if they have Closed the acct out completely its a bit harder if at all

Just realized my *wood points are about to expire. Can anyone verify the truth about the posts above that only staying, buying in *wood store, or using spg credit card will keep them alive?
