How to avoid EZ PASS $50 fine/fee
« on: August 29, 2013, 03:25:20 PM »
Was driving someones car and took along my EZ Pass. For some reason one of the tolls didnt catch it, and the car owner received a notice that he has to pay the $4 toll + a $50 service fee.

For payment there is option to add the vehicles licence plates to your existing EZ Pass account and avoid the $50 fee.

I added his licence plate to my account and the $4 toll was deducted from my account and the $50 fee was dropped.

This should work if ever you are driving a car without EZPass, when they send the notice (or even before) just add those plates to your or a friends account.

And them next time your friend drives thru a EZpass without a tag. They will bill you.
Very Smart.

After the fee drops, remove it. Simple.

I thought this was standard operating procedure. I got 4 fines in one shot, I called up and five minutes later all fines were off.

I don't think it's a major חידוש, but this was my first time ever dealing with this.
I figured I'd share my experience as I'm sure some can benefit from it.
I guess for someone who's never used one b4 and is in a rush can skip the cash lane and know there is a simple way out  (unless that is illegal?).

FYI, I once tried this with a rental car but it didn't work. I actually added the car to my account BEFORE going through the toll, but it still got charged to AVIS's ezpass, not mine.

Was there a physical EZ Pass in the Avis car? If so it will automatically scan and charge that.

They do have shielded bags which can stop the piece from being scanned. I came with my ez pass, and also when i added a car there was an option for them to send you a spare for free.

What did you expect? How should they know which tag to bill??

The OP's scenario is where there is no tag in the car and the choice in either a ticket or your ezpass tag.

In your case it did work -  you didn't get a $50 ticket.

With this technique, when you go through the toll, does it say EZpass paid? Or does it say unpaid, and in back office it takes care of matching up car to tag.

The reason I ask, is the difference will be by a toll with a bar (bridges/tunnels).

IIRC the car didn't have a tag in it, though apparently it was still registered with ezpass...

Went through the Holland Ezpass lane twice, in a Hertz rental, with my own EZPASS.
First one went through, and I got billed. Second one must have not registered and I got billed by platepass for $39.
Do I call Ezpass or Platepass?
