How Many Times Did Take Your Road Test?

My BIL just pased his road test at the 3rd attempt, he feels like a failure...
So I thought let's see what's the average here on DDF, maybe he's not that bad, maybe there are ppl who failed more times than him....

It would prob help to know where (which state) the tests were taken as there are major differences

Good points, maybe people in the NYC area could also put their in their thoughts and experiences, of which road test area is easy/successful etc.

I have a crazy story. I failed my road test the first time.
The second time, one of the very first things I did was make a perfectly legal right turn on red. The test woman immediately told me that I was done. I said but I didn't do anything, I didn't do any parking, I just made 1 turn? She basically said that I should have been extra safe on a road test and even though that turn was legal I failed.

A few weeks later my license came in the mail. I called up and said I think this is a mistake, I failed. The guy straight up told me he was too lazy to change anything in the system and that it was my lucky day.

I still don't know if there was a mistake made or maybe the tester changed her mind. I believe it was a mistake but who knows.

I passed my road test on the first try in New Jersey. It was on an obstacle course and was a joke. Guy didn't even ask me to do half the course and my driving in reverse was a crooked line.

My written (permit) test is where I had a problem. 1st time I took it, I failed by 2 questions. Second time I failed by 1. When I called to schedule the 3rd one they asked me if I wanted to have someone read the questions to me as some people do better that way. I said sure. When I went to take the test, the lady reading me the questions only gave me 2 choices per question instead of 4. And one of the choices was so ridiculous. I got a perfect score

Somewhat off topic (as all good threads on DDF are )....

Has anyone had a "good experience" -- i.e., very short wait, or no wait -- at  a NYS DMV Office.  Yonkers, NY has to be one of the worst experiences ever, White Plains, NY is not much better.

Have to bring my son for his written test in a few weeks....dreading Yonkers.

How about upstate?  Newburgh, Middletown, Monticello?  Anyone on DDF with experiences in those offices?

1 for each! well technically my motorcycle license I didn't take a road test... I took the MSF course and passed, they gave me a certificate went to the DMV and they issued my License.

Where did you BIL take the test? (What state)

Just some facts: The permit test is much harder in NJ then NY. In NJ its 50 questions and in NY it's 20. Also the NJ test has questions about fines and penalties which I believe the NY doesn't have CMIIW

E.g. A question on the NJ test will be "Whats the penalty  when your busted DUI for the 2nd time in 6 months?"

OTOH, The road test in NJ is very easy.  It usually takes places in a parking lot setting.  The state has designated areas that are used for the test.

In NY,  depending on the city, the test can be very hard.
