isn't there a store where you can do canister "trade-ins" and they give you a newly fillled canister (like your gas grill -- a propane tank trade)?
I think all stores do that

Built my own sodastream. It was a bit more of an investment, but we drink a ton of seltzer.

That's the way to go IMO. Good job Shauly.
That looks like a 5lb tank. It should last a while and you can refill for cheap.
I have a 20lb tank and it's still going strong after carbonating hundreds of gallons. Refill cost: $25.

;D Thanks! Everyone should do it.

It's a 2 kilo tank. The bigger ones were a lot more expensive, and they told me that I could swap up when I refill and just pay the difference, so I'm going to see how long it goes. We do about 2 bottles a day, and it's ~$15 to refill. Seltzer here costs ~$1.50 a bottle (the most convenient place to get it), so after the first week it started paying for itself.

My father has a 20lb tank. He makes 6+ bottles a day, and more for shabbos. He refills it once every six months or so.

They sell adaptor pieces to adapt a paintball tank to a sodastream. Paintball tanks can be refilled at any sporting goods store for like 3 bucks

20 dollars for the adaptor piece and then need to buy the tank.

So it's a smaller investment than what I did but it seems like it would also be a smaller payoff.

If you are looking into a cheaper option than refilling the regular sodastream, what I did was not hard at all.

I have mine hooked up to a kegerator with three 5 gallon kegs so I don't need to mess with bottles and I have it on tap 8)

Of course. It comes from the air.

But I live in a small apartment, and there's only one of me drinking seltzer, so I don't really need a large apparatus.

I hope you didn't drink all those hundreds of gallons of beer yourself.  ;D

Yeah I hear that. If you use the paintball thing, make sure to let us know how it goes!

If anyone is interested, here are really good instructions to build your own seltzer maker:

::)
It is not so easy to separate from the air. It is usually captured as a byproduct. See here from the CRC.

Rav Ovadia said it's muttar. So if you're sefardi you're good.

I can't think of any reason it would be assur--can you?

Only thing I can come up with is Molad. Just like some Poskim prohibit discharging whipped cream from a pressurized can, since it is tantamount to transforming the liquid cream into a solid whip. Granted, this is not necessarily the same thing, because here, it is liquid both before and after the gas is added, but there is still a change occurring to the liquid. I don't know if that change is enough, that's why I asked if anyone has asked this in the past...
