I find a picture of the Gaon on the forum to be inappropriate. To me, he represents pure holiness and spirituality...

Wrong. Many Jewish stories and legends (such as the Golem) are just stories. This one is a fact, and well documented by very trustworthy people of that generation. There are very strong traditions citing this story. Just because some guy wrote on wikipedia, that he questions the story, doesn't make him right. It is a very strong tradition - and it's not that long ago.

There are very strong traditions in many different religions. There seems to be different versions of this story. Either way it does not matter what I think.

+1 Definitely an accepted fact among  all lithuanian jewry for the last 250 years,  it has a very strong oral tradition with halachic implications. It very different than the golem story. 
I never heard, in my community any doubt that he existed.
