For a non-pro, does it work well as a camera? I would buy a sub 200 point and shoot, but thinking about getting this instead and using it as my camera. Does that make sense?
$80 off the GoPro Hero4 Silver - add it to the cart and the price will drop down to $318.99.http://www.dansdeals.com/go/73175/The Silver is the better option than the Black for most people as it has a built-in touch screen. Discounts on this model are also quite rare compared to the Black.
Would you/can you use this as a dash cam in addition to a helmet cam for just riding around the city (kind of like a dash cam for your bike)?
There are people using it as a dash cam. It has a looping option which is very useful for these kind of applications - records constantly but only retains the last five minutes.
That sounds very useful, the looping feature. Would you get it for that use alone? I don't go on crazy adventures, though I do admit it would have been great for the drive on the RTH.
I'm up to my third (or is it fourth?) GoPro and never once used this feature. I just don't find it useful personally; i rather shoot long and cut as needed.
Not a good idea. It's the best in the market for what it's designed for (POV photography and video), but it won't do you well as a regular camera. Weird distortion, no zoom, hardly any controls...
I'm confused, your supposed to get this, and get another regular camera too ? What's the pros to this specific camera ?
Yes. This one is good for action/underwater, not great at regular shooting when you need more control over things.
The question is, is this a better option then the camera I currently have now - canon 12 MP power shot SD950 IS digital ELPH - that I use for regular pictures ?
+1. I'm just a point and shoot guy - rarely any settings used.
Even so, the lens itself is a lot better on a P&S compared to a gopro.
It's very simple. If you need a camera for regular pictures, the GoPro is not for you. The GoPro is meant to supplement your existing camera, to do things a regular camera either can't do or is not good at doing.
Thanks for the response. Any options out there for a good primary camera, that can work underwater as well ?
No such creature exists at your price point.
