Topic Wiki

This Wiki is far from complete so please add to it!

The main Orthodox Community is located in Oak Park/Southfield.
There are also communities in the Young Israel of Southfield neighborhood and West Bloomfield/Farmington Hills.
Getting there:
Best option: 7.5k avios from LGA/PHL
10k UA from EWR
Or DL 12.5k, sometimes 7.5k
Often there are cheap paid fares on Frontier from Trenton(TTN)
Or ACY on spirit
It's 10 hours drive from NYC & 9+ from Lakewood.
If renting a oneway from hertz, drop at centerline, MI.

Where to stay:
People are very hospitable!
There are no hotels within walking distance to the main Oak Park/Southfield community, though the Holiday Inn Express in Farmington Hills is a 20-25 minute walk from two shuls.
The Westin in Southfield isn't far by car.
The airport Sheraton is now a Cat 1.

Where to eat:

Prime10 is a centrally located steakhouse, and probably the best kosher Fleishigs in Detroit.
They have a decent lunch special. Expect to pay $35 plus per person.

Kravings is a very solid, centrally located burger/sandwich/sushi/shabbos takeout place.
They are open Thursday nights until 1ish with Cholent.
Meals start at around $10.

Sara's in the oak park JCC, very solid deli the oak park JCC is (permanently) closed, and so is Sara's.

Dave's is currently closed.

Jerusalem Pizza has plenty of specialty pizzas, Kishka, BBQ, Sephardic and Mexican are some of the more popular ones, but even the plain pizza is incredible.
Their regular pies are thick and smallish.
They also offer a "New York style" pie, but it is not recommended, as they specialize in their own style of pizza and not NY Style pizza, so why would you get the same stuff that you could get on the east coast?!
They have plenty of calzones. Bread sticks/cheese sticks are a must.
Order by phone if you're in a rush as they usually take 15mins to get you your pizza.
They also have a branch in the West Bloomfield JCC.

Grove Kosher Supermarket (beautifully redone - previously One stop) has plenty of Kosher products, as well as Fleishig takeout, Sushi, and Pizza.
Spread's Café is a breakfast / bakery next to the Grove. They have eggs, bagels, ice cream, pastries, salads, coffee, etc.
Wok in Cari Out is Chinese takeout, also next to the Grove.
Soul Cafe in West Bloomfield is a nice dairy place a bit more upscale then the rest (only open for breakfast and lunch)
Gold N Greens is in the Wayne County Cafeteria. They are only open when college is in session.
They are not Cholov Yisroel. It costs about $8 for all you can eat: pizza, bread sticks, soy stuff, salads, desserts, soft ice cream, sodas, chocolate milk, OJ... Kids 5& under are free. 6-12 is $4.

Zeman's bakery is centrally located and is very solid.
Dunkin Donuts/baskin Robbins is kosher and also centrally located. (Not CY/PY)

There are also two Kosher bakeries in the West Bloomfield/Farmington Hills area, Bake Station and Dakota Bread.

I don't think so. Portions are good and it is a nicer place. Meanwhile there aren't many options. Gotta take what you can get.

Detroit isn't known exactly to be the scenic or beautiful type of place.

Yes. Also worth noting just across the border in Windsor the legal age is 19.

There are a bunch of Delta Skyteam ones in Mcnamara and a Lufthansa lounge in the north terminal.
Not sure what else.

We're going to visit grandma in Detroit for a few days in August and then we want to take a few day vacation from there. Any suggestions for a good place to go that's at most 4 hours driving distance? We're thinking Niagara/Toronto as of now, but would rather not mess with border, passports, etc.

Up in Northern Michigan is an amazing place to go. Very underrated in my opinion beautiful scenery open skies. No Jewish community but I happen to know some people who are RVing up to the Northern Peninsula

I didn't mean that you should RV just saying I know a family that does it. It is beautiful up there and lots of things to do for tourists

Does anyone have advice regarding buying tickets from LGA to DTW with Avios? I've tried recently more than once, on different dates and have not found a lot of availability. When searching on AA.com the availability is the same.

(Honestly, I'm also wondering if the lack of availability has to do with people - not mentioning names - selling mileage tickets which basically ruins it for people who try to use BA miles for actual flights that they are taking and NOT selling. Honestly, I would never buy a mileage ticket from someone if I was only saving $20-30 a ticket...but that's me.)

It seams to be tough that route I was also checking the past week or so, but with UA availability is much better.

I just checked and you are right, but it's 10k miles on United each way, and United is out of Newark. :(

LGA-DTW is one of the most common BA booking routes. It's almost never worth it to buy a paid ticket on that route. You can buy from a TA for cheaper.
