Topic Wiki

This Wiki is far from complete so please add to it!

The main Jewish Community is located in Oak Park/Southfield.
There are other smaller parts in the Young Israel of Southfield neighborhood and also West Bloomfield.
Getting there:
Best option: 7.5k avios from LGA/PHL
10k UA from EWR
Or DL 12.5k, sometimes 7.5k
Often there are cheap paid fares on Frontier from Trenton(TTN)
Or ACY on spirit
It's 10 hours drive from NYC & 9+ from Lakewood.
If renting a oneway from hertz, drop at centerline, MI.

Where to stay:
People are very hospitable!
There are no hotels within walking distance to the main Jewish community.
The Westin in Southfield isn't far by car.
The airport Sheraton is now a Cat 1.

Where to eat:
Somewhat current: http://www.shamash.org/kosher/search.php?Comm=two&Area=Detroit+MI+Metro+area

Prime10 is centrally located, and probably the best kosher flayshigs in Detroit.
They have a decent lunch special. Expect to pay $35 plus per person.

Kravings is a very solid, centrally located burger/sandwich/sushi/shabbos takeout place.
They are open Thursday nights until 1ish with Cholent.
Meals start at around $10.

Sara's in the oak park JCC, very solid deli the oak park JCC is (permanently) closed, and so is Sara's.

Dave's is currently closed.

Jerusalem Pizza has plenty of specialty pizzas.
Their regular pies are thick and smallish.
They also offer a "New York style" pie.
They have plenty of calzones. Bread sticks/cheese sticks are a must.
Order by phone if youre in a rush as they usually take 15mins to get you your pizza.
They also have a branch in the West Bloomfield JCC.

the soul cafe in west bloomfield is a nice dairy place a bit more upscale then the rest
One Stop supermarket also sells take-out pizza inside their store.

Gold N Greens is in the Wayne County Cafeteria. They are only open when college is in session.
They are not Cholov Yisroel. It costs about $8 for all you can eat: pizza, bread sticks, soy stuff, salads, desserts, soft ice cream, sodas, chocolate milk, OJ... Kids 5& under are free. 6-12 is $4.

Zemans bakery is centrally located and is very solid.
Dunkin Donuts/baskin Robbins is kosher and also centrally located.

Definitely Jerusalem Pizza. Call in your order b4 cuz it can take some time. They pan fry their pizzas through a conveyer belt oven. I may be a little biased, but itís my favorite pizza as their crust doesnít taste like cardboard like most pizza shops. They have pretty good calzones too. Donít miss their BBQ pizza, cheese sticks and Jerusalem bread IMHO.
Today's not a good day to be discussing this. I'm getting hungry. Maybe a DO?

JPizza is great for it's fun variety. Though I honestly get a New York Style pizza when I go there because the other stuff isn't pizza but its delicious and fun to try.

The only other place worth trying IMO is Kravings but if you're not in the store and just ordering out I'd prob skip it as there orders do get messed up sometimes.
Their BBQ brisket is one of my favorites.
Sushi is pretty great as well.
But unfortunately, nothing in Detroit worth too much effort for.

Jerusalem Pizza is unique the others are not. Like previously mentioned, get regular pizza and mozzarella sticks. Both very good, skip all the weird toppings.

How is regular pizza unique?
Have plenty of pizza in CLE. Don't have Kravings, Prime 10, etc style places.

It's the dough. Very interesting style.

You might not have places like Kravings, Prime 10 in CLE but can easily get from ORD, NYC etc don't bother getting from DTW.

Issis and Kinnerets pizza are made very similar to every other kosher pizza shop in the world.
Jerusalem pizza is very unique, itís smaller pies that are fried in a deep pan through a conveyer belt oven, and the dough actually tastes good.

Their "regular" pizza isn't regular. That's why I order New york style there if I want real regular pizza.   Prob the only interesting place worth ordering from. Their menu can be seen online.
Their tuna sandwich is tasty too. And bread sticks and cheese sticks too.

OK, so Jerusalem Pizza for lunch and then Kravings for a BYOK.

Now just need to figure out what to order from each.
