Personally, I wouldn't recommend taking the subway late at night. In general the Subway's system runs on a slower paced schedule at night and it will take longer. (the really slow schedule used to be from 12 AM, but I saw signs last week saying they are moving it back even earlier). It will be even harder for your relatives who don't speak/read English. Just imagine them trying to find directions or missing their stop. And lastly, it's not that safe.
If they're spending money/points and a nice city hotel, let them enjoy it all the way with a nice taxi ride home.
Just my $0.02.

Thanks. I think I'll take that advice and maybe I'll just book them a hotel in Brooklyn so they can be close to the wedding and the next day they can travel to Manhattan. Would that be easier? Also... if they have just one day in Manhattan, what are some ideas of what they should do?

Which hotel to book?
« Reply #301 on: January 25, 2012, 11:45:30 AM »
Has anyone stayed in any of the frum hotels in Brooklyn?  I'm looking into the Pointe Plaza.  Anyone ever stayed there who can advise me on how the rooms and food were? And how far it is from Borough Park and Manhattan?

also I am looking to book with Expedia- I usually use Travelocity because they are good about letting me cancel. Has anyone canceled successfully with Expedia before?

Groupon is excellent with refunds for any reason, and they're cheaper and throw in a bottle of wine:

I'm looking at March 26-28 and I see March 26 is one of the blackout dates for the Groupon. So I would need to book at least one night with Expedia. They are pricing me 252.38 for two nights with tax included. Seems about the same.

Think it's worth splitting it up? Buying one Groupon and then using Expedia for the first night?

I've stayed at the Park House, and I've been at Avenue Plaza. Between the two, I would recommend the PH because the rooms are much bigger. Although the AP is much newer, the PH has recently been refurbished and some of the rooms are really beautiful. Breakfast there is not too bad either.

I think using the acronym 'PH' for the Park house is a crime

FYI, a friend of mine recently spent a weekend (incl. Shabbos) at the Andaz 5th Ave. and it's really not a Shabbos-friendly hotel:

1. The stairwells all have motion-sensors 24/7.
2. There's an AC sensor (can be disabled).
3. The rooms' light switches are sensor based, so walking by too closely can turn on/off some lights.
4. Opening the room door turns on some lights.
5. Some lights turn off after some time if no motion is detected.

These were the experiences reported to me, anyone have a good experience there on Shabbos?

Anyone know if the Andaz Wall St. is the same in these regards?

What rates are you getting and what rates are you looking for? In general the Plaza in an extremely expensive hotel that rarely has sales.

Gah, bad timing. Short notice is probably what ruined our meetup. I.e. if it was planned ahead with an official time and place set, I'd make it. Thanks for trying to set it up, hopefully next time we can make it work.
Any time this week or next week?

I'll be staying at the Beekman Tower next week. Their address is Mitchell Place, and I think it's in Midtown.
Any recommondations for dinner, take-out for the flight back, and a place to buy some decent priced beer? How about an early shachris? Thoughts on the hotel?

We will be arriving at LGA on Friday and renting a car.  The plan is to drive about an hour in to NJ for a wedding and then return to NYC to do some touristy stuff on Sunday and stay there through Wednesday.

We're using free rental awards from Hertz with some points I had leftover.  The terms state I have to return the car at the same place I picked it up from, in this case LGA.  We're staying in a hotel near Times Square.  I plan on using the $10 Jetsetter deal to get from the hotel to LGA on Wednesday, which just leaves one missing link:  Getting from Hertz@LGA to Times Square on Sunday after I drop the car off.  What are some of the best and most economical ways to do this?  I'm assuming a cab is going to be way too expensive.  Thanks in advance.
