I have never been to amsterdam so i cant comment but Gotham has a full bar if that makes a difference.

The bus/shuttle options probably take forever, but if you have the time it's certainly less of a hassle than the Airtrain/Subway/PATH option.

I did Airtrain>LIRR>NJ Transit a few weeks back. It took about 1.5 hours.

+1 traffic would kill it. Train is faster than a car very often. Take the airtrain to the e, e to PATH, PATH to newark. Probably your best option. Its never easy to get from one side of nyc to the other and then cross into jersey.
