Thought into this and all I came up with was this:

Book with cash, and platinum members always have availability, and then PUTPAC for them to use the free night award.

Anyone with experience with this working?

Check starpics for the Manhattan Times Square, Four Points & Element. On weekends (and sometimes Monday nights as well) you can get those for under $200. Midweek however, you can expect to pay well over 300.

You're telling me that the hotel showed no standard rooms for sale (e.g. no award availability), you book a Plat Guar rate, and someone switched the Guar rate into an award night?
Please let me know which hotel, for what night, and who you spoke to please if I understood you correctly as that's very rare.

I have a friend going from Israel to NY, and needs a hotel from 1/12 to 1/19.
He's hoping to stay close to Times Square and needs a minyan for shabbas.

He'd like to spend under $120 a night, and I'm not sure if that's possible. I'd be willing to book for him using points if the value of the points in in that range. I have SPG and MR points.

Any ideas, or is he asking for too much at that price.

tell him to use PC points and book a holiday inn for 150/nt in the city. many to chose from
and for all those that are going to ask that he doesnt have PC points--buy them 25k*.006=150/nt including everything

The only way I saw to book award stays is through calling. I Called and was told that there's absolutely nothing available in Andaz 5ht ave. for the following week.

(Note that i tried the GH, Lex & 48th, and the Andaz wall street, too; all I was able to get with an award was one night at the GH and one night at Lex.)

I than called the regular line and booked the Andaz 5ht Ave. with cash. I did not need to use the platinum guarantee.

Today I called and asked them to use my award instead of the whopping $500+, she put me on hold for a while, and returned by saying that (indeed) since this is an award booking to which not all rooms are available, she will have switch me for one of the nights to a king size bed instead of two double beds. She told me that she tried a few times to keep me in the same room but the system would not let her.

It's possible that exactly when I called there were two openings, and for exactly the nights I needed, but I don't think so as this is a busy season and, as I mentioned before, all Hyatts in the city are pretty much full for the following week.

I guess to be more accurate this shall be deemed a YMMV and not a full proof trick.

But that's two rooms on consecutive nights at a time when no other Hyatt (Andaz Wall street, GH, Lex & 48.) in the city had more than one room available for this entire week, and the Andaz 5th Ave. had zero availability. From the time I checked all this and until I had my bookings in the Andaz was less then 48 hours.

All that really doesn't matter. I also have had an experience (with the PHP) that availability, as Dan mentioned, constantly changes.

And, trust me, it was probably harder to get a room at the PHP than it is at the Andaz (or has been IME).
