Menorah lighting in Hotels
« on: October 24, 2012, 11:16:17 PM »
Has anyone had any experience with this? I'll be out of town for part of chanukah and staying at a hotel. Has anyone had any experience with a lit menorah in their hotel room? That is, were there any problems with the smoke detector going off, or the fact that it was a non-smoking hotel.

Thanks

Interesting opinion I remember reading in a sefer with regards to menorah on a plane. His shita was that the most mehudar way to light on a plane was to use an electric menorah, without saying a brocho.

IMO it's different, whereas in a plane it's probably a Sakkanah, I'm sure that with proper peoples skills you should be able to get approved to do it in a hotel.

Was on vacation once at a hotel over chanukah, there were no problems bh for menorah. We did put it out a little less than an hour later, so it shouldn't start smoking etc.

Varies greatly by hotel. I have done it in hotel rooms, on balconies...however once when I was afraid the smoke alarm might go off (it was a smoke free hotel) I asked, and wasn't allowed to light anywhere on the hotel property- not even outside!

I did this year like pic attached and had no issues.

It's not the first time, and never had an issue.

I always watch it until fire is out.
Always praying for delayed baggage.

Go to a hotel with a kitchenette, such as residence inn.

If there is room for cooking, the smoke detector shouldn't be too sensitive to be triggered by tea lights.

Done Shabbos candles many times in this chain without my having any reservations . . . (about the lighting of tea lights  :) ).

Should probably ask your LOR as it goes against the terms of the hotel to light a fire in your room. By doing that you don't have a right to be in your room so technically you can't light chanukah candles there.  So you might actually be worse off by making a bracha lvatala
But I'm still proud to be from clev!
