That is correct IME, though I don't know age cutoff.

Anyone living near Canadian border or traveling to Canada can get NEXUS for children under 18 for free. It includes GE. It takes much longer to get the initial approval, 6-8 weeks IME.

I travel to Canada a lot.  How do I get nexus for my children for free?  Does it also include the precheck?

You need to apply for each person separately.

Go to https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov/main/goes and create a login for each person applying (including an account for each of your kids), you can use the same email address for multiple accounts.

When you select Nexus as the program you want to apply for, it will simply not ask for any payment if it is for a person under 18 years of age.

Just beware that initial approval takes much longer than GE, the Canadians seem to work much slower (and it also needs to get US approval) so expect 6-8 weeks until you get initial approval.

After that, you need to schedule appointments. Major airports such as YYZ and YUL have Sunday appointments too, other locations (close to US/Canada border) usually are closed on weekends and legal holidays of either country.

Once you got all your approvals, pick a date where you can schedule all of them on the same day, and login to each account separately to schedule the appointments.

Nexus includes GE for free (and GE is active immediately, even before you get your card, unlike Nexus, so coming back into US from your interview you can take the GE lane). When you get GE, you have a KTN (known traveler number) which generally gets you TSA PreCheck

My wife and I have GE, but we haven't got it yet for our kids. None of us have Nexus and we are planning Canadian road travel next summer.

But we are flying internationally this winter.

I'd like to get the whole family GE/Nexus and I have 4 Amex Pt reimbursements.

What would be the best way to proceed?

2, ages 3 and 6.
The question is where would you schedule the interviews?

What's your closest/or most convenient GE or Nexus enrollment center to take your kids?

I would say convenience of getting to enrollment center trumps all. If you all have GE but not Nexus you will have GE and TSA PreCheck but no nexus. So you will have to go to regular immigration line going into Canada. If you schedule your Nexus interview in conjunction with your trip, it won't help you going into Canada that time.

I saw that. If you don't think you will get near the Canadian border with your kids any time soon.(Realistically you might be looking at nexus appointments in October or November if you apply today). Just get them GE.  You can still apply for Nexus separately, if your plans change, but nexus requires a lot more advance planning.

If you apply for Nexus and get an approval (you can do this for kids without paying any fee), you can then switch to GE (will have to pay fee) and have your pre-approval in a day or two.

in 2011, Upon return from Asia, I was asked to go have my bags checked near the exit door by a CBP agent  cos he said i got many bags. So the women scanned my bags in machine and inspected and I had some dry meat in package for personal use. you know the ones like beef jerky and clearly labeled. I was warned by the inspecting CBP lady to declare them next time and it would be a fine of $300 if I fail to declare them on custom form. She took away the meat packs with a warning but didn't  fine me and I profusely apologized for my stupidity. I told her since what i have are 3 packs for personal use and not for commercial, i thought i didn't have to declare. she let me go.

I wonder if that will be an issue if I apply for GE?

Very informative post ... does it means that you can get Nexus (which includes GE and TSE) for each child under 18 for free?
