anybody with desktop computers make sure you either have a surge protector for the power AND Ethernet, or if its not being used - unplug the power and ethernet
what do u mean by ethernet? the router should be plugged into a surge protector?

the most common way surges kill your computer is 1 of 3 ways. 1) power surge - this usually affects the power supply (that's why laptops aren't affected) use a decent surge protector and you should be fine. 2 & 3 is the network cable and if you have a fax line or modem. This type of surge can kill your motherboard and hard drive and destroy the computer. To avoid this problem either unplug the Ethernet and fax cable from pc, or use a better surge protector that has an extra Ethernet protection.

my ethernet cable goes from my pc to the router. is that a problem? would plugging the router into a surge protector help?

1) Can this happen without warning?
Is there any "cues" I can take to know when it's basically time to unplug my computer, or this could happen suddenly and I'll lose all my stuff?

2) If Ch"V this happens, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY for me to recover the info in my computer?
