Topic Wiki

AMEX T&C on all cards state you can't have had the card within the last 12 months. Most usually specify the family (Gold, Platinum, Zync). Usually no crossover biz to personal (i.e. you can get biz bonus when you have personal).
Sometimes they only disallow that card (i.e. if you have platinum you may still get gold).
How do you know what the terms are?
READ THE T&C ON THE APPLICATION PAGE. THEY ARE VERY CLEAR!!!

Update 4/24/13:
It's no longer clear who will get the bonus, but it's very clear who will not receive it.

Beware of the new addition to the T&C of personal cards:
If you are identified as a current American Express® Cardmember, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.
We don't know yet the effects, it can't be good, so take it into consideration. It might be a way to cut off churners even after a year of having the product.

You should always send a SM several times. There were multiple reports of success if persistent enough after being denied the bonus. Don't bother calling, only SM! Don't give up so fast. Be creative and harsh. Say that a rep told you that you will get the bonus on the card. Follow up, demand an investigation and follow up again.

I am on the phone with a representative and she is saying that after May 1st, you are only eligible for bonus points on a card once in a lifetime for a card!
Please say this is not true

Anyone have issues of multiple cards being put into hold when doing 2bm - which means they need a few days to make a decision (and probably means 2 pulls)?

This happened to me with Starwood and Delta. I called and they said the apps were each put into "hold" and i would have to wait a few days for a decision on each. I knew this possibly meant multiple pulls as per others experiences. So I pushed just to do the starwood app now, first. She checked with her manager, then said she would try, then tried and couldnt because it was in "hold". She couldnt process either of my apps because they were both in hold from the other.

I hucad with the same result - this was what the system was showing all the reps. They insisted i needed to wait.

Hucad again and the guy said the same thing.. after chatting with him he also told me they didnt run my credit yet, and i could try cancelling both apps with no credit pulls, wait half hour and reapply just for 1. I told him to go ahead and cancel them. Now its as if i did nothing and back to square one.

I waited, and instead of 2bm I applied just for starwood... pending, called, approved.
Applied for Delta 10 minutes later... pending, called, approved.

Don't know if it'll be 1 or 2 pulls...

Good to know advice. If someone else had this same experience, this should be wiki'd. Thanks

Is this potentially the way to outsmart all Amex's new bonus terms?

I always got a new number every time I signed up. The CSR nevertheless told me last week that I don't qualify because of previous cards. Although, I suppose I'll see what happens.

so after reading through most of this thread it seems that most people who have been denied the signup bonus due to having received it within the last 12 months didn't have any luck fighting amex to get it ?

The only way that I see now for the Gold, PRG, platinum is to get spread them out over 4 months between each  application and close right after you get the points.

I just have 1 data point, but a brand new MR account did NOT accomplish the above in my case.

Has anyone done a 2bm with 2 Amex charge cards and been denied 1 of the bonuses, because of the 90 day rule?

But the T&C usually say not eligible if you've had any zync, gold, platinum (green too?) in the last 12 months, so it seems like it's only 1 of each...?
ETA: just reread T&C for gold "Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product within the last 12 months or any other Consumer ZYNC®, Green or Gold Card or Platinum Card® account within the last 90 days."
so figure sign up, spend in 30 days cancel and reapply in 3 months.
