Topic Wiki

AMEX T&C on all cards state you can't have had the card within the last 12 months. Most usually specify the family (Gold, Platinum, Zync). Usually no crossover biz to personal (i.e. you can get biz bonus when you have personal).
Sometimes they only disallow that card (i.e. if you have platinum you may still get gold).
How do you know what the terms are?
READ THE T&C ON THE APPLICATION PAGE. THEY ARE VERY CLEAR!!!

Update 4/24/13:
It's no longer clear who will get the bonus, but it's very clear who will not receive it.

Beware of the new addition to the T&C of personal cards:
If you are identified as a current American Express® Cardmember, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.
We don't know yet the effects, it can't be good, so take it into consideration. It might be a way to cut off churners even after a year of having the product.

You should always send a SM several times. There were multiple reports of success if persistent enough after being denied the bonus. Don't bother calling, only SM! Don't give up so fast. Be creative and harsh. Say that a rep told you that you will get the bonus on the card. Follow up, demand an investigation and follow up again.

I am on the phone with a representative and she is saying that after May 1st, you are only eligible for bonus points on a card once in a lifetime for a card!
Please say this is not true

Update. I got them to give me 15k for 5k spend. No 10k after first purchase but I'll settle for that :)
What's their excuse for not giving the 10k if they are willing to give the 15k or it's just one of those "don't ask questions type":)

She interpreted the welcome bonus as only being the initial 10k. The interpretation of the 15k after 5k was... the "don't ask questions type"  :)

I applied for the PRG and PLAT cards in Jan when there was the public offer for 50k and 100k respectively. I applied for both cards at the exact same time in a two-browser application, but the PRG got approved a couple days before the PLAT.

I only got the 50k for the PRG, but not the 100k for the PLAT. I tried PM's, but every time the response was the same, that
since I "already had" the PRG, I am not eligible for the PLAT. I tried at least 20 PM's with every type of reasoning and excuse, and the answer always comes back the same. I tried calling, but Amex got smart, and, apparently, the MR rep's no longer have control of issuing points, and they tell me that if I want any type of reconsideration, I would need to "write to the correspondence dept".

Has anyone had success with the correspondence dept?

Amex cards are becoming less and less worth for churners. Just like Citi, get a great deal once and done for a long while. Amex F/Rs top the cake. Chase is the best until... God forbid....

There just aren't cracks in the system, you got it once? You ain't getting it again.

Good that people think that ;)
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Elaborate please...

If someone only gets amex personal cards for rightful fear of F/R, he's almost one and done.

Yup, those Citi cards are worthless.  :)
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

I did a 2bm for a mercedes benz platinum and a gold card. Its my first time have amex cards besides for a costco amex card.

Bh the points are pending on both. I'd like to combine the 2 membership rewards accounts into one account so I can have 100,000 in one account.

Is there a risk of losing 50,000 if I combine? (Since they'll see that I have another card from the same family).

MB is from a different family, but you can't get a gold bonus (officially) within 90 days of an MB bonus and vice versa.

So does that mean that if I ask them to combine the membership rewards accounts, I risk losing 50,000 points?
The points already posted in both accounts.

It means it can be a risk. I personally would not do it. What do you gain by doing it?

Just ask them to transfer the points from one account to another. Combining MR accounts are a hassle
