Topic Wiki

AMEX T&C on all cards state you can't have had the card within the last 12 months. Most usually specify the family (Gold, Platinum, Zync). Usually no crossover biz to personal (i.e. you can get biz bonus when you have personal).
Sometimes they only disallow that card (i.e. if you have platinum you may still get gold).
How do you know what the terms are?
READ THE T&C ON THE APPLICATION PAGE. THEY ARE VERY CLEAR!!!

Update 4/24/13:
It's no longer clear who will get the bonus, but it's very clear who will not receive it.

Beware of the new addition to the T&C of personal cards:
If you are identified as a current American Express® Cardmember, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.
We don't know yet the effects, it can't be good, so take it into consideration. It might be a way to cut off churners even after a year of having the product.

You should always send a SM several times. There were multiple reports of success if persistent enough after being denied the bonus. Don't bother calling, only SM! Don't give up so fast. Be creative and harsh. Say that a rep told you that you will get the bonus on the card. Follow up, demand an investigation and follow up again.

I am on the phone with a representative and she is saying that after May 1st, you are only eligible for bonus points on a card once in a lifetime for a card!
Please say this is not true

Thanks you inspired me I gave up 8 weeks ago after numerous back and forthwas about to close the card and throw in the towel sent this message as a reply to my final rejection 8 weeks ago.

All I could say as a loyal Amex costumer for years Im extremelly saddened by the poor service and very mean way of dealing with this issue. I feel robbed of 50k points of an offer mailed to me . I used to be a vocal supporter to my friends and family and I am very hurt .

Didn't get a response

emailed again

I never got a response to my last email sent a few days ago .
I have been ignored numerous times . Promised that my request will be passed on to another dept 3 months ago , still never received a written reply from that other dept. Promised someone will call me , that never happened.
I would still like the 50k Membership Reward owed to me added to my account
I would also like the fax number and mailing address to your executive offices

Response (S. Jain)     04/23/2013 04:14 PM

I tried calling you, however, the call reached your voice mail. I request you to reply to this email with the appropriate time to to call.

I see that you have already contacted us many times regarding the bonus offer.

I am sorry for the miscommunication. As a one time exception, I have issued 50,000 reward points to your account.

It was a pleasure to assist you.

Don't know if it was a factor but I was really solicited for this offer via mail and it was 11.5 months since I closed my last card , thats what I was arguing all along

Great news. I guess that persistence is required. That'swwhat I'm doing too.

If you don't mind me asking, when was the last time you opened a card and got the bonus?
A few months ago.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Both of these stories teach us one thing: those reps at the email servicing team CAN issue points. They continuously lie that they cannot and don't have control over it, but in reality they do and they could.

Saying "there is nothing we can do" seems like a cowardly way of denying points. Instead of answering the customer, they are getting customers off their back by saying "there is nothing we can do".

A few months ago.
Is it possible that they fine-tuned "the system" since then?

I ended up with 63k points from my PRG!  ;D ;D
I got 13,000 for retention right away for threatening to close the card for not getting the points.

When I'm at my desk, I'll post the conversation.

So, should I even close my PRG now to get the clock ticking, or you can always fight for it?
It seems like that recently, for persistent DDFers, success is quite high.

My SM messages, starting 4/18:

Quote
Hi,
I will start by saying that I'm very happy as a American Express customer for the past while and I'm looking forward to doing more business with you.
But I have a problem, I was promised the 50,000 bonus points on this card and confirmed to me by a rep twice on the phone right after I got the card and before I did the required spending.
I took the reps at their words and spent money on this card as well of course as on my other american express cards.
When I was supposed to get the bonus and I didn't get it, first the reps said that they don't know why and then another rep claimed that it's because I had an old gold card on which I didn't actually get any bonus. Then another rep gave another reason at all. I basically got zero consistency from various reps after being promised the bonus several times on the phone by an american express representative.
I would love to trust the word of amex reps, but this makes it very hard for me if every rep says something else and is contradictory and when one promises and the other reneges on the promise.
I would be very happy if you would be able to honor the promise and post the promised 50,000 points to my account.
Thank you very much!
I'm looking forward to doing more business with you.

First Amex response:

Quote
Dear Moshe123,
I'll be glad to look into this matter for you.
I've checked your account details along with Customer Service notations and I'm sorry, I could not locate any confirmation on the account regarding the bonus points.
However, please do not worry. In order to have this matter investigated further so that appropriate actions can be taken, you will be happy to know, I have initiated an inquiry for you.
Our concerned Special Team will now investigate this matter and as soon as the matter is resolved, we'll notify you.
We earnestly appreciate your patience and co-operation while this matter is evaluated for you!
Sincerely,
Suryatapa Nath
Email Servicing Team
American Express Customer Care

My response:

Quote
Hi Suryatapa,
The service reps might not have made notes on the account, but they have told me twice that I will get the bonus points on the phone before I did the spend on the card. Thank you for understanding.

Next Amex response:

Quote
Dear Moshe123,
Thank you for writing with this information.
I have updated the information provided in your email so that the inquiry can be resolved with the precision.
Our specialists will perform a detailed research in this matter and your account will be noted with a resolution.
We appreciate your understanding with this matter.
Sincerely,

Shivani Aswal
Email Servicing Team
American Express Interactive Services

And my response 5 days later inspired by yaakov s and MnM1130:

Quote
I feel like that I'm being ignored. I'm not getting any responses from any department. I am a good customer and I feel like I was robbed of the 50,000 Points that I was entitled to. I would like to continue our relationship, but this is giving me second thoughts.
Please have the points posted to my account. I greatly appreciate it. See if a manager can approve it. Thank you very much.
I'm sorry if this reads like a rant,  I am just very upset after the runaround that I got.
Thanks for understanding.

And their response:

Quote
Dear Mr. Moshe123,

I am extremely sorry to know about your such an experience with us.

I have discussed your matter with my supervisor and have immediately issued 50,000 points to you.

You now have 68,861 available points.

I hope my quick action is to your satisfaction and brings a smile on your face.

Have an excellent day!

Sincerely,

Did you get signup bonuses for PRG before?
If yes, how many times?

I am sure that is a big part of your success, and others earlier in the thread.
IME, the reps seem a lot less generous when there has been multiple signup bonuses prior on the same type of card.

Has anyone had had success at HUCA and SM on a type of card for which you already got multiple signup bonuses in the past?
