AMEX T&C on all cards state you can't have had the card within the last 12 months. Most usually specify the family (Gold, Platinum, Zync). Usually no crossover biz to personal (i.e. you can get biz bonus when you have personal).
Sometimes they only disallow that card (i.e. if you have platinum you may still get gold).
How do you know what the terms are?
READ THE T&C ON THE APPLICATION PAGE. THEY ARE VERY CLEAR!!!

Update 4/24/13:
It's no longer clear who will get the bonus, but it's very clear who will not receive it.

Beware of the new addition to the T&C of personal cards:
If you are identified as a current American Express® Cardmember, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.
We don't know yet the effects, it can't be good, so take it into consideration. It might be a way to cut off churners even after a year of having the product.

You should always send a SM several times. There were multiple reports of success if persistent enough after being denied the bonus. Don't bother calling, only SM! Don't give up so fast. Be creative and harsh. Say that a rep told you that you will get the bonus on the card. Follow up, demand an investigation and follow up again.

I am on the phone with a representative and she is saying that after May 1st, you are only eligible for bonus points on a card once in a lifetime for a card!
Please say this is not true

He wants to know if he should sm for a lousy 500 points??
He probably wants to know, since his 500 base points aren't pending yet, maybe he still has a shot at the 50k. Please CMIIAW.

of course you should sm for 500 points, the question was whether to sm for them and the fifty k or not rock the boat and just wait and see.

Why did you apply?? It just pushes off the amount of time until you can get the gold bonus?

A little more than that.

Scroll back a few pages and see. Many success stories after much persistence. Though they seem to be tougher on habitual abusers.

As I pointed out earlier, the only success stories were from people who did not really have a churn history with Amex.
[P.S. How do you define a "habitual abuser"?]

The same way you would define someone with a "churn history." ::)
I don't get the -1 if we're essentially saying the same thing. But hey, it's a free country :)

Yo should be, but there are no guarantees with AMEX.

Why? According to T&C hes in the clear.
Yo should be, but there are no guarantees with AMEX.
I was in the same boat for both and got them. Assuming you didn't have the MB in last year (I believe terms state "this card" to the exclusion of even other platinum cards), or another MR personal card in last 90 days you should be good.
For BGR, as long as you didn't have any other biz MR in last year you should be good as well.

Hi,
It’s one of  my first times on the forums & I'm finding it a bit hard 2 find the answer 2 my Q.
The story is like this I got my first amex gold rewards about a year ago and I never activated it. A few months passed and I had been targeted for a 50k offer and i applied for it. I was told that i currently have a gold card but i never activated it. I had asked the representative if I can cancel the non activated card and reapply fot the new one and receive the bonus and she said yes. Now after meeting the spending requirement withen the time limit I had not seen my points posted and I called back and was told that im blocked out from getting the bonus points because I had a gold card within 12 months. I told them that I was told that since it was not activated I can still be eligible and she said thats clearly not the case... any ideas?? thanks so much!

SM and explain yourself articulately and you'll get the points after first or second try.
