Topic Wiki

AMEX T&C on all cards state you can't have had the card within the last 12 months. Most usually specify the family (Gold, Platinum, Zync). Usually no crossover biz to personal (i.e. you can get biz bonus when you have personal).
Sometimes they only disallow that card (i.e. if you have platinum you may still get gold).
How do you know what the terms are?
READ THE T&C ON THE APPLICATION PAGE. THEY ARE VERY CLEAR!!!

Update 4/24/13:
It's no longer clear who will get the bonus, but it's very clear who will not receive it.

Beware of the new addition to the T&C of personal cards:
If you are identified as a current American Express® Cardmember, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.
We don't know yet the effects, it can't be good, so take it into consideration. It might be a way to cut off churners even after a year of having the product.

You should always send a SM several times. There were multiple reports of success if persistent enough after being denied the bonus. Don't bother calling, only SM! Don't give up so fast. Be creative and harsh. Say that a rep told you that you will get the bonus on the card. Follow up, demand an investigation and follow up again.

I am on the phone with a representative and she is saying that after May 1st, you are only eligible for bonus points on a card once in a lifetime for a card!
Please say this is not true

I cancelled my Business Plat over a year ago, but Amex still sends me snail mail updates about that card acting like I still have it. I also noticed that if I go to http://www304.americanexpress.com/getthecard?intlink=US-Homepage-LookingForACard-PersonalCards# a picture of a SPG and a Bus Plat show up there under the heading "My cards" (My only Amex card right now is an SPG.)

Should I be worried? Anyone else ever had this happen to them?

Yup, this is classic.

My father just received a targeted offer for Amex Biz Plat for 50K after $5K spend. He just closed a plat about 3 months ago so technically with Amex's new restrictions, he should not be able to get the bonus right?

The odd thing is that no where in the targeted mail nor the application page that i access using his invite code, does it state the usual restriction verbiage (i.e. that if he had this card or a similar card in the past 12 month he is not eligible for the bonus).

Does this mean he can apply for this card and get the points even tho he just closed the same Amex plat card? can't i just claim that the offer he received didn't stated any such rules?

Amex mail is ALMOST NEVER in sync with reality. They send mail for closed accounts, for accounts that never existed. You can try applying for it, but IMO you are definitely up for a fight.

Is the closed plat a business plat? If not he is eligible.

Take a screenshot and call Amex to get a confirmation of eligibility with name etc . As Smokey Joe said he should be ok but best to not them any wiggle room .

Thanks everyone. He indeed had a business platinum card, so technically he shouldn't be eligible based on their new rules. yet, this offer doesn't specifically state those rules, which makes me believe he should be good to go.

still based on everyone's advice and philly's recent experience, the best course of action seems to apply for tho offer but document the process heavily as ammo (i.e. screenshots).

These targeted offers might be a great way around the 12 month rule it seems.

It took me 7 sm's on my account (still working for my wife's account) and I finally got the SPG points. I didn't have success with the Gold yet.

BTW these offers were from back in October when they did not state these conditions and STILL they wanted to deny the bonus.

This new term as being "identified" as an AMEXER seems foreboding.

Any advice?

My targeted offer didn't pass muster . I am waiting the 1 year rule out .

After being inspired by Dan
I just finished a run on amex for me and my wife

MB plat
gold
delta
starwoods

I closed Plat within 60 days all other open

Should I close my other cards now in order to churn them, or wait until I am ready to do it (12 months etc) ?

Thanks

You need to wait 12 months from date of closure.

A few questions:

1. The wiki says "Usually no crossover biz to personal (i.e. you can get biz bonus when you have personal)." Is this still true? If yes does it work the other way as well? (i.e. can you get the personal bonus when you have/had the biz?)

2. If you are/were an AU on an account will that cause you to be considered a "current Amex cardmember"?

3. Do the new rules affect the ability to do a 3BM?

TIA, and I apologize for not having read through all 60 pages of this thread in case my answers are there somewhere...

You need to wait 12 months from date of closure.

For whatever reason I have not had any problem churning even after the "new terms"
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Have you done it since Feb 2013 (when it really became difficult)?
If yes, I guess it is time for me to start Dirahdeals.com so I can  get preferential treatment from AMEX  :D
