Keeping Amtrak points from expiring
« on: May 03, 2010, 12:34:52 PM »
I have about 1100 Amtrak Guest Reward points that will expire in a few months. I don't use Amtrak often but it seems a pity to lose these points, especially when I can eventually transfer them to Continental (once I accrue enough). My question is twofold: 1) does it make sense to buy the cheapest ticket possible just to keep these points unexpired for another three years and 2) if I buy that ticket, do I actually have to travel with it or will I still get the points and will it still count as rail travel even if I never set foot on the train?

Locally, I know I can buy a one-way ticket for as little as $14. If I do some research, I may find cheaper routes around the country.
