My guess is SPG, though I'm not sure SPG to which partner. It would also depend on availability.

What class are you looking to fly?

United: 80/135/160 in Saver (standard ain't worth your time).

Delta: 100/150

US Airways 80/110/140

AA 75/135/140

Etc. etc.

SPG>AA>QF

If he's looking for business it's a waste of SPG, QF has 0.001 availability on this route...
For Economy you're right it would be very easy to find, and a good redemption.

Qantas have rediculous fuel charges, your better off using AA miles and either way youll fly on a qantas plane.
Also with delta you can choose to fly on V australia which have great new planes and very good customer service.

I posted that above.

For DL/AA/US, it's 20% less using SPG when transferring 20k increments.

united usually has tons of availability, and their miles are easier usually to come across then AA. nevertheless, qantas has recently upgraded their 747's on that route to all be fitted with their award winning A380 seats, so if you could get AA, your flight will most probably be more enjoyable on aa/qantas. especially in business class!
if you want to "BUY" a ticket get a quote from Qantasexpert@gmail.com very good australian travel agency.

Not sure I agree with that statement with regards to economy class seats. They are designed so that the seat reclines along with the back. This allows them to have less space between rows, and stick more seats on the plane.
The net result is that there is less room between rows, making it hard to get in and out if you are not sitting at the aisle, and there is less room to manoeuvre when using your tray table and seat is upright (such as meal time).
Due to the minimal amount of space, they make the seat pocket so tight that you can maybe get one book or tablet in there.
When flying with child seat, in QF it was right up against the seat in front, whereas in UA there was a couple of inches.
Of course, QF beats UA hands down in many other areas, but seats are not one of them, I don't care about how award winning they are.

I don't know about you, but I prefer a smaller pocket and uncomfortable getting in/out if it'll mean I can sleep more comfortably most of the flight, especially if we're talking about such a long flight. But I'm not speaking from experience, so I can't say if I'd find these seats more comfortable and thus agree to the above tradeoff.

What makes the QF seats more comfortable?
I did not feel much of a difference in comfort.
