Basically there are a couple cards to help you get some Delta miles that from what everyone is saying is your best bet for finding an award ticket with points to Australia.  You'd have to be able to reach the spend limits on the cards to get the sign up bonuses and you might not get them quick enough to get there when you want to.

Delta Amex
Amex premier rewards gold card (these points transfer to Delta)
Amex Starwood(transfers to Delta)

Depending on what your score/history is you can apply for 1 or more of these cards.  Do you currently have any Amex cards open?

I don't know why everyone is recommending Delta miles, especially in coach, A few Chase and United cc's will get her there a whole lot quicker.

Chase Sapphire preferred
and Chase Ink bold

That alone should cover your ticket if there is availability.

 1)sapphire preferred card you need to spend $3k in order to get 40k in points within 3 months

2)United explorer you need to spend $1k for 30k possible 55k points

3) Not exactly sure about ink bold.

You have to realize there are different tricks to do this (3bm, matching 55k ) which you may not know. Its a lot of basic information to learn but once you know it your good. I hope it goes well.

3bm browser method - is opening 3 separate browsers and applying for 3 diff cards from the same bank (ex. Amex) at the same time so you only get one cc pull on your credit report.

3 separate browsers..(ex explorer, chrome, firefox) not 3 sep windows.

And try to hit the apply button on all three within a few seconds of each other.
