Kosher Food Options
Contact Chabad Parana for updated information regarding any Kosher food there. Otherwise plenty of snacks and fruits.

Hotels with Points
None.

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - They are metered from FLN to where you are going. We stayed in Barra Lagoa and it was R$55.
Executive Bus - Yellow buses go between major destinations to the airport and bus terminal - R$6.
Public Bus - Not from the airport. But from the bus station it's tricky but doable - R$3.

Major Activities
Water-sports and relaxing. During peak-season (Dec-Jan) there is plenty to do, such as scuba diving, gliding, boat tours and more. We were there during winter break (Jul) and the waves were great for surfing, and the dunes at Joaquina were great for sandboarding.

There are beautiful beaches all over the island of Florianopolis. During the winter the north beaches tend to be the warmest as the wind doesn't attack it directly. Center/east beaches are really nice, the best for surfing, but can get cold. Mole and Joaquina are the most popular from those. Didn't trek down south on my trip there, but the beaches are supposedly great as well, though very calm and sleepy kind of towns next to them and people going fishing there.

A small town on the west side of the island, has a boardwalk and bicycle path along the water, nice place to go for sunset. Old historic architecture there, many buildings there hundreds of years old. It's about 10-15 minutes north of downtown FLN.

That can be said for anywhere but I believe he plans to go summer time (in Brazil)
Right, but even more so for places like Rio that have such a heavy emphasis on outdoor activities. Same for LA. However, places like NY, Paris, London, etc have large amounts of tourist attractions indoors because of the high amount of bad weather they get. I went on November and while they said it was extremely unusual, it did end up raining for the entire time we were there, up until we left for the airport to fly back.

I'd cancel IGU based on that, it needs to be enjoyed not rushed & both sides is a must see.

Honestly I'd stay in GIG the entire time, it's a gorgeous city with so much to do & see, you can easily fill up 4 days there no problem.

The JCC had the most incredible sushi store when I was there 3 years ago, I wonder if it's still open
I'm with Dan, IGU w/o IGR still worth it, especially with boat and copter views

I am booked to GRU as well with last week's deal, Thank you Dan! Arriving Sun at 10:30 AM and departing late Thursday night. Trying to decide where to spend the 5 days we have. We have been to GIG on a weeklong company trip and really enjoyed. When I booked this trip my instinct was to spend some time in IGU- now with Argentinian borders closed, debating if I should skip this and go to MAO instead. I don't want to spend all my time in GRU.
Also direct flights on Sunday to IGU after we land are from 6 PM and on. Direct flights to MAO on Sunday after we land are at 10:10 PM or 6:50 AM the next morning.
Would appreciate any suggestions and ideas as well as debating the long layover in the airport? ( I don't thing I will be back in the area any time soon).

A couple family members also bought tix to brazil to come with us, but the they're concerned about zika in brazil (which we totally forgot about)... Is that still a thing?

Her OB said "follow CDC guidelines" but that's problematic (and unhelpful) for a couple reasons:

1) A single case makes the CDC highlight the whole country and
2) brazil is purple, which means that CDC is directing ppl to "talk to a health care provider about potential risks. If you decide to travel, prevent mosquito bites and sexual exposure to Zika."

Awesome sauce.

Anyone know an OB that is well-versed in this stuff I can point her to? or a doctor in Brazil?

Layover until the IGU flight at 6 PM (landing 1030 AM) or MAO flight is at 10 PM and I have the day to kill b/c I land in GRU late AM?

I think you would need time to see popular sights in the area. I was looking at this particular company, was interested in doing the 2 night/3 day tours.

Way to short, to experience MAO you need to go on a jungle trip & for that you need 3 days min

Since you're looking into Zika, I'm curious - have you looked into Yellow Fever?
There was an outbreak a couple years ago. In response, the CDC started recommending the YF vaccine even if just traveling to GRU/GIG.

On the one hand, the incident numbers seem low. On the other hand, it's a terrible disease, and maybe it's low because the Brazilians seem to have vaccinated almost the entire population.

In case you are considering driving the coast between GRU and GIG, that's probably higher risk (e.g. I think there were cases in the Ilha Grande area). I'm guessing people do the urban areas without vaccination as there is less exposure to the wildlife that carry the virus. But then there's IGU. I don't know myself, but if you're checking with a medical professional about Zika, you may want to check on YF at the same time...

FWIW, I checked with two OB/GYN doctors in Rio, both of whom stated Zika is not currently a concern. Additionally, the Chabad shliach for Manuas (sent him your regards, @Dan) spoke with two other doctors on my behalf, one of which was a infectionologist, and they confirmed the same.

Anything to do in GRU that's worth extending my stop before heading to GIG?

Assuming anything is open, does anyone have any recommendations?

In the time it took to sort out the Zika issue, flights from SAO to GIG have soared, unless we spend the day in SAO, which I'm not sure we want to do.

Am I crazy to consider a drive to, and connecting through, VCP? Looks to be between 75-120 mins away.  Now, before you call me crazy, a connection to CGH, which is much closer as the crow flies, is only slightly closer due to city traffic. One way flights GRU to GIG/SDU when I need them (i.e., 11 am to 2 pm) range from $265-400 pp OW, whereas flights from VCP to SDU are only $125 pp OW.

So I'd save $230 if I went to VCP, less cost of Uber which appears to be about $60. So, $170. Insane?

Nuts.
Go eat lunch and take the 3:30pm from CGH-SDU.
