Kosher Food Options
Contact Chabad Parana for updated information regarding any Kosher food there. Otherwise plenty of snacks and fruits.

Hotels with Points
None.

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - They are metered from FLN to where you are going. We stayed in Barra Lagoa and it was R$55.
Executive Bus - Yellow buses go between major destinations to the airport and bus terminal - R$6.
Public Bus - Not from the airport. But from the bus station it's tricky but doable - R$3.

Major Activities
Water-sports and relaxing. During peak-season (Dec-Jan) there is plenty to do, such as scuba diving, gliding, boat tours and more. We were there during winter break (Jul) and the waves were great for surfing, and the dunes at Joaquina were great for sandboarding.

There are beautiful beaches all over the island of Florianopolis. During the winter the north beaches tend to be the warmest as the wind doesn't attack it directly. Center/east beaches are really nice, the best for surfing, but can get cold. Mole and Joaquina are the most popular from those. Didn't trek down south on my trip there, but the beaches are supposedly great as well, though very calm and sleepy kind of towns next to them and people going fishing there.

A small town on the west side of the island, has a boardwalk and bicycle path along the water, nice place to go for sunset. Old historic architecture there, many buildings there hundreds of years old. It's about 10-15 minutes north of downtown FLN.

Anyone been to Brazil lately? If so, can you tell me a little about how it is with Covid restrictions there?

Also, is it safe for 2 women alone to travel there?

Supposed to be traveling there in 2 weeks, and trying to decide if we should cancel the trip or not.

they are the current world leader in covid cases and deaths.
The hospitals are overwhelmed and have waiting lists in many cases to get a bed
do your research about the current situation there

Thank you. That is exactly what I’m trying to do :). I am aware of the Covid situation, but am not worried about getting sick as I have had Covid and am vaccinated. My question is more about if things are closed

Avoid favelas. Don't wear jewelry. Travel together. Avoid wandering around at night. Safe trip!

Was in GIG in Dec/Jan with wife. Never felt unsafe at all, either from a covid or other perspective. Things seemed to be generally operating, though I'm sure not quite to the level of 2019. Two kosher restaurants were open.

sugar loaf mountain was closed for 2 weeks but reopened april 9th

If the hospitals are overwhelmed if anything were to happen on the trip even not covid related
the medical care would presumably be substandard
don't forget you need a covid test within 3 days to come back to america
the best place to do it is probably in the gru airport  the results take about 4 hours to get back and it costs 70 dollars or so

the covid situation in jan and now  cannot be compared it is so much worse now
there was a lockdown in gru and rio for a few weeks it has now been lifted but the situation is even worse then before the lockdown so there is a risk it will be re imposed although the president is opposed to any lockdowns

Depends on what experience you want. Easiest and in the main Jewish community is Chabad Central on Melo Alves in Jardins.
But I also spent Shabbos in Itaim, Morumbi, Perdizes, Vila Mariana, and in the yeshiva and they're all great.

Maybe go to one of the satellite locations on Friday night and Chabad Central for Shabbos day to get a taste of both? Be sure to check if they're operating normally due to COVID.

If you're in GRU on the first Monday of the month, don't miss Pizza Bráz.

@Yaalili Any favorites?

For the best Kiddush? :)

Back in my days there, Itaim and Morumbi both had very large spreads on Friday Night. Between the two I would pick Itaim, it’s a larger Shul and more central location.

Shabbos afternoon, main Chabad on Melo Alves has a really good Kiddush and the Safra Shul in Higienopolis had the best!

Shluchim wise, you can’t go wrong with most of them, we always enjoyed Rosenfeld in Pinheiros and went there often.

Perdizes, Villa Mariana and Bom Retiro (Yeshiva) should all be skipped IMO, lack of atmosphere.

And @Yaalili too, if you've ever spent Shabbos in BA...

Did Shabbos in BA but we were being hosted by a family in Once and davened in a local Shul there.

The main Chabad on Melo Alves will feel the most like your local Shul, while also being a Chabad House with a Kiddush, it’s the Anash Shul. Best Chabad overall considering, Kiddush, location and Shul Atmosphere I would probably vote for Itaim.

Morumbi is nice but it is far out there, boring location to be on Shabbos IMO. Pinehiros also not the most ideal busy location, and no Friday night Kiddush when we were there, though great Shliach.

I would not go to Chabad Higienopolis, Chabad Perdizes, Chabad Villa Mariana or Yeshiva Bom Retiro.

Would go to any of the other places and will be enjoyable.

Staying at a hotel there or finding Airbnb?

Jardins-Itaim is the Ashkenazi area for the most part and Higienopolis is more Sefardi.

Ibirapuera Park is the city’s main park (think Central Park) and is near Itaim. Nice for a Shabbos afternoon.

So GOL cancelled the direct CGB-GRU flight. Original itin gave me a 2:50 connection domestic to international at GRU, which was perfectly doable.

Only other viable option now is Azul CGB-VCP with a 3:15 connection - but I need to move between airports. Google claims the drive time is 1:15-1:40. Even assuming I get to GRU two hours after landing, I still have 75 minutes. With airports being a lot emptier than usual, I think this may be doable.

The only real risk is an inbound flight delay, but that would've been the case on the original itin as well.

Thoughts?

Connecting in GRU is a disaster. I wouldn't attempt this unless you're arriving before 7am or after 9pm.

Indeed, this will be after 9pm.
