Kosher Food Options
Contact Chabad Parana for updated information regarding any Kosher food there. Otherwise plenty of snacks and fruits.

Hotels with Points
None.

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - They are metered from FLN to where you are going. We stayed in Barra Lagoa and it was R$55.
Executive Bus - Yellow buses go between major destinations to the airport and bus terminal - R$6.
Public Bus - Not from the airport. But from the bus station it's tricky but doable - R$3.

Major Activities
Water-sports and relaxing. During peak-season (Dec-Jan) there is plenty to do, such as scuba diving, gliding, boat tours and more. We were there during winter break (Jul) and the waves were great for surfing, and the dunes at Joaquina were great for sandboarding.

There are beautiful beaches all over the island of Florianopolis. During the winter the north beaches tend to be the warmest as the wind doesn't attack it directly. Center/east beaches are really nice, the best for surfing, but can get cold. Mole and Joaquina are the most popular from those. Didn't trek down south on my trip there, but the beaches are supposedly great as well, though very calm and sleepy kind of towns next to them and people going fishing there.

A small town on the west side of the island, has a boardwalk and bicycle path along the water, nice place to go for sunset. Old historic architecture there, many buildings there hundreds of years old. It's about 10-15 minutes north of downtown FLN.

Did my Brazil visa today in Manhattan and thought I would share my experience in case anyone finds themselves in the same situation.

Step 1. Thay accept visa apps from 10 to 12 only. I showed up at 10 in the consulate on the 21st floor after getting a temp visitor pass to this huge building.

Step 2. I got upstairs and waited on line to get inside the office then another line to get to the reception desk where they issue a ticket number. So far 35 minutes standing on line. Another ten minutes and they called my number. 45 min total and the workers said it was a quite day.

Step 3. important they needed 160 us postal office money order only to pay for the visa. 2ppl can get one for 360. Proof of return ticket which they looked at for a second and gave back. Mine was already cancelled for the record. Third thing was passport with 1 blank page. 4th was the copy of online visa app with passport picture glued on. You cannot take your own photo as they have alot of rules about it. Officialy they need a proof of address but they did not ask me for it. Seems like it is not enforced which was good for my situation as the wife has license under married name and passport under maiden name.

Step 4. You get a ticket and a few days later (they tell you when) you bring back ticket between 2 and 4 only and get back passport. Anyone can pick it up for you but if you do not bring it will cost another 20 usd pp. Mail is not accepted.

IPANEMA ON SHABBAT:
I'm planing to visit Rio de Janeiro in November, and I was wondering if anyone has experience with shabbat and kosher food in the Ipanema area?
I contacted Beit Lubavitch - Ipanema about shabbat davening and kosher food, but they didn't answer my questions and just told me to contact Lubavitch Copacabana (which hasn't gotten back to me, and which is in a different neighborhood).
If anyone here has information about  the Ipanema area, I'd be thrilled.
Thanks so much!

For starters the kosher food scene is pretty small. Leblon has a Chabad which is near Ipanema, however they do not do Shabbos meals, only Copacabana. You can order food before shabbos from Copa but I would not walk from one area to the next.

What about the Chabad of Ipanema? Does that actually exist? Do they do have any shabbat davening?

Hey everyone -

Looks like I will be in Sao Paulo shortly before Pesach for a wedding, and am looking to stay in Brazil through Pesach. Thinking to spend some time in Sao Paulo, Rio, and Florianopolis. Seems like there's plenty of kosher / shuls in SP and RDJ. Anyone know if there's anything kosher available in Florianopolis?

Also - would anyone know the chances of kosher places in SP or RDJ offering Pesach food (e.g. kosher for pesach restaurants or ready made foods)?

This thread was very helpful. Any additional thoughts on these places would be much appreciated :)

Thanks!

Nothing kosher in Floripa (Flohr-E-Pa) as it's called. I had a fun time there, but I'd do Iguacu before that.

Are there kosher restaurants in Rio? It was on and off when I was there.

There are a few kosher places in Rio. There is a pizza shop which we went to motzei shabbos. There is also a place which is open on Thursday night, where they can give you Shabbos food. We actually ate by this really nice Chabad shliach. There is also a Sunday buffet (lunch time) at the day school which reminded me of the HKG Sunday buffet!

Iguacu is amazing! Just remember not to feed the monkeys when they come to the windows of your hotel room.

I feel like igazu looks amazing, but isn't there only so long you can look at a waterfall? And it doesn't seem like there's much else to do in the area...

Also, Anyone go to the Amazon in Brazil? Anything they suggest?

Iguazu is nothing like Niagara, there's a ton to do there and you need to see it from Brazil and Argentine to fully appreciate it.
You need 2-3 days to do it right.

A DDF'er has been to the Amazon IIRC. I have a good friend on shlichus there in Manaus.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

  • Location: The value of a forum such as this one is not in that one can post a question and receive an answer, but in that the question has most likely been asked before, and the answer is available to him that will but only use the search function.
  • Programs: 1. Search on google. 2. Search in the right board of DDF with a general word or two. 3. Read the wiki. 4. Read the thread. 5. Ask away.
