Kosher Food Options
Contact Chabad Parana for updated information regarding any Kosher food there. Otherwise plenty of snacks and fruits.

Hotels with Points
None.

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - They are metered from FLN to where you are going. We stayed in Barra Lagoa and it was R$55.
Executive Bus - Yellow buses go between major destinations to the airport and bus terminal - R$6.
Public Bus - Not from the airport. But from the bus station it's tricky but doable - R$3.

Major Activities
Water-sports and relaxing. During peak-season (Dec-Jan) there is plenty to do, such as scuba diving, gliding, boat tours and more. We were there during winter break (Jul) and the waves were great for surfing, and the dunes at Joaquina were great for sandboarding.

There are beautiful beaches all over the island of Florianopolis. During the winter the north beaches tend to be the warmest as the wind doesn't attack it directly. Center/east beaches are really nice, the best for surfing, but can get cold. Mole and Joaquina are the most popular from those. Didn't trek down south on my trip there, but the beaches are supposedly great as well, though very calm and sleepy kind of towns next to them and people going fishing there.

A small town on the west side of the island, has a boardwalk and bicycle path along the water, nice place to go for sunset. Old historic architecture there, many buildings there hundreds of years old. It's about 10-15 minutes north of downtown FLN.

Here is my TR from the Amazon.

For starters, getting to the Amazon is best done through the city of Manaus, Brazil. MAO. I was coming from Rio and ended up getting a ticket on GOL using 10K AA points. Otherwise the ticket would have cost over 300 USD. TAM can be cheaper but they charge more for non Brazilians and I didn't  wanna pay more cause I am not Brazilian. We flew out on a Sunday night flight, on this crowded smelly plane, stuffed in coach which was hard. We landed abt 4.5 hours later and found a driver to take us to our Bed and Breakfast. We stayed at this cheap place called the Chez les Rois, which has clean rooms for 60 USD a night. Top rated on TA. Reminded me of an Israeli Tzimmer. More about this place later. The advantage was they watched out stuff while we were in the Amazon for 2 nights which made traveling in and out of the Amazon much easier. Their customer service was also great as it is a small little place with probably about ten rooms. It is also in a safe part of the city and close to the Chabad house.

The following morning we were scheduled to be picked up by our lodge in the Amazon at noon. Until then we walked to the Chabad house to pick up the food we ordered online for our trip. They have everything from Cholov yisroel cheese to guacamole and chicken and rice. All the food is reasonably priced and it is really good. Our biggest mistake was walking the ten minutes to the Chabad house as the heat and humidity even at 10 am is worse then anything I can remember. We got lost on the way back and no one spoke English in that area. We got the food together and were then picked up by the Amazon lodge which took care of the transportation.

In regard to Amazon lodges there are many options, and we decided to go with the Amazon Eco Park Eco lodge. It is the only lodge which does not cost a bloody fortune and still has AC and hot showers. The room was actually really nice. We did the basic package for 3 days 2 nights which is a good amount of time to be there for. Any less is to short but longer would be boring and way to hot!! Cost was 450 per person including food, there is no way out of that. We did get  a fridge in the room which was a big thing as none of the rooms are equipped with a a fridge. Most Amazon lodges do not even have electricity after 10 at night.

The trip to the lodge was done in 2 parts. We were brought to the local port and boarded a boat which then took us up the Amazon river to our lodge. There are no roads or any other ways to get there. It is only about a half hour boat ride but it is still in middle of the Amazon rainforest. We got to the lodge and were shown to our cottage. First thing we did was turn on the AC of course as the heat really takes alot out of  you. Later that day we were taken on a boat to visit these Indians who showed us their native way of life. Intead of faking that they still run around like they did 200 years ago they instead just showed us how they live off the land today, although they were wearing jeans and had modern stuff. Less of a tourist trap than other lodges that get these guys dressed up and it looks really cool until their cell phone goes off and spoils the moment! I personally was not into the whole Indian thing. After the Indian tour we went Piranah fishing which was really cool. Everyone gets a fishing rod made of bamboo and some meat to put on the hook. 2 ppl caught these fish with razor blades for teeth. Was fun to hold these little monsters. We then got back to the lodge by sunset and were off the rest of the day. The free time is good for walking around the grounds, which is big and nice. They even have parrots which sometimes fly in for a visit!

To be continued....

The following morning of our Amazon trip we went on a guided tour of the rainforest. We got lucky and were the only 2 ppl in the group. The way it works is that when you check in they give you a schedule of all your tours and then you meet in the open air lobby for each tour. Our guide started walking in the forest and within 30 seconds the jungle swallowed us up and we had no clue where we had come from. Our guide is an Indian who saw a building for the first time when he was 30. He told us how growing up in the village they ate mainly fish however sometimes they would kill monkeys with their bow and arrows. He had these scars running up his arms which he got in his Indian Bar Mitzva. When they become teenagers they take a machete and cut even lines every centimeter around their arms from the shoulder to the hand!

Once we were in the forest it was cool how he knew what everthing was. He would see a vine a start swinging on it like Tarzan a solid 40 feet. We got to try it too. He would randomly pick up roots and leaves and show us things they would do with them. He taughts us how to use a dart gun and bow and arrow etc. It was really cool. This tour was probably the best part of the Amazon for us.

We got back 3 hours later and were given the afternoon to chill. We had nothing scheduled until 3pm so we went swimming in these natural pools that ran along our cottage. We then went kayaking ourselves on the Amazon to watch the monkeys on the riverbanks. They have kayaks but do not advertise it so you gotta ask. At 3 we joined up with a tour to go to an island nearby which has a lot of monkeys which you can see up close. They were way cooler than the monkeys we would see anywhere else in Brazil, After that we caught some more Piranah and were done. That night we went crocodile hunting. The idea is that since the river is so dark when you shine a search light it lights up their eyes and blinds them for a few minutes. The guide then jumps into the pirhana infested amazon to grab it and show it to eveyone. Did not find anything though.

That was it for the Amazon and the next morning we took the 930 am departure, which we did in order to have a day to explore Manaus.

To be continued.

It seems that AA has ended their relationship with GOL. Anyone aware whether you can still book intra Brazil tickets using aa miles?

Also, I am flying to SP for a wedding next month and have the opportunity to spend a few days somewhere in Brazil, from a Thursday-sunday. Not sure how it would work trying to do one of these Amazon tours over Shabbat. Is it possible to do day trips in the Amazon and return to manaus for Shabbat?

When would you get to Manaus on Thursday night?

in the afternoon? You can do day tours from Manaus but you won't get the same feeling as if you are staying there. Manaus is also a really hot place to just hang around. You can do one day in Manaus and one day trip to the amazon though if you want.

that makes sense... so basically, I'm spending time in SP and Rio...

I have the ability to spend Thursday-Sunday elsewhere, and the options seem to be 1) Florianopolis 2) Igauzu Falls 3) Amazon....

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

I would do Iguazu if I were you. In that amount of time you can see the falls from both sides and appreciate it, instead of going to Manaus and not really doing it right.

+1000
Though, beats me what on earth you'd be doing a whole entire Shabbos in that border-area of the falls..  Why not spend a Shabbos in Rio or SP?   There are lots of great places to spend Shabbos..
I highly recommend Iguasu if you have extra time (Amazonas probably requires lots more time).
