We were planning on spending shabbos in Once with a family friend. Did you not like BA a on shabbos because of the hotel and shul/lack of a community?

I'm sure it will be better in Once.
My beef was being in the Recoleta area for shabbos.

I would skip BA for Rio personally. Marriot IIRC is close to the Jewish center of Copa, I did not stay there I actually stayed at the Sheraton but the Marriot looked really nice. I did check it out as I had looked into staying there and was curious what it's like. It is right across the street from the famous Copacabana beach.

I've only been to the one in Recoleta, but there are other major ones in San Telmo and Palermo.

Rio=An absolutely stunning city, but extremely pritzusdik, dangerous esp at night, with little kosher food. Used to be cheap but probably isn't anymore due to the strong currency.
BA=A European feeling city that's far more affordable than Europe due to the Peso blue market, with a plethora of very unique kosher food, ice cream, and bakeries. And an awesome PH.
Iguazu=Breathtaking and fun but nothing kosher and the dated Sheraton is perfectly located but overpriced.

No kidding Shabbos was then "disappointing"!
Shabbos in Once was for me a beautiful experience, no comparison at all to Shabbos in Rio - where there is hardly a frum community (if at all)...
Spending Shabbos in Once BA - the largest concentration of Jews in the southern hemisphere, is IMHO a must, if your traveling to that region.

Exactly.  Unless you know someone there are no hotels in Once and it's a shlep to walk from the PH to Once though it is doable in a pinch.  I'm not one to call and ask to be hosted by a stranger.

4+ yrs ago, I did know several people there, not in a hotel ('nuff said ).

Good question, IDK the answer, though perhaps some resident Porteños on DDF can answer that.  But I do know that (also unlike SP) the community is very very poor (a select few are very wealthy, but that's pretty much it).

The frum community in SP is all concentrated in Jardins, though there are dozens of other amazing massive chabad houses throughput SP.
Jardins is quite lovely though and there's a great kiddush lunch at Chabad.

That's not so simple - at all.
The community is basically split between Jardins and Higienópolis.
Though I agree as well that Jardins is a lovely neighborhood, and yes there are other beautiful Chabad houses throughout SP, you really can't skip over Higienópolis in which a very large percentage of the community lives.
In Higienópolis there are beautiful tremendous Shul's, e.g. the gorgeous Beit Yaakov AKA Safra shul, Mekor Chaim + many more.

BTW FTR there are two Chabad Shul's in Jardins, though you are probably referring to the Beit Chabad Central

ETA: Though I must add, that Jardins and Higienópolis are really not far from each other, and you can walk from one to the other, though it's inconvenient.  Both are very wealthy areas.

Yup, forgot about Higienópolis. 
I preferred Jardins though.

Either are much nicer than Once.
