Kosher Food Options
Contact Chabad Parana for updated information regarding any Kosher food there. Otherwise plenty of snacks and fruits.

Hotels with Points
None.

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - They are metered from FLN to where you are going. We stayed in Barra Lagoa and it was R$55.
Executive Bus - Yellow buses go between major destinations to the airport and bus terminal - R$6.
Public Bus - Not from the airport. But from the bus station it's tricky but doable - R$3.

Major Activities
Water-sports and relaxing. During peak-season (Dec-Jan) there is plenty to do, such as scuba diving, gliding, boat tours and more. We were there during winter break (Jul) and the waves were great for surfing, and the dunes at Joaquina were great for sandboarding.

There are beautiful beaches all over the island of Florianopolis. During the winter the north beaches tend to be the warmest as the wind doesn't attack it directly. Center/east beaches are really nice, the best for surfing, but can get cold. Mole and Joaquina are the most popular from those. Didn't trek down south on my trip there, but the beaches are supposedly great as well, though very calm and sleepy kind of towns next to them and people going fishing there.

A small town on the west side of the island, has a boardwalk and bicycle path along the water, nice place to go for sunset. Old historic architecture there, many buildings there hundreds of years old. It's about 10-15 minutes north of downtown FLN.

Yup, forgot about Higienópolis.
I preferred Jardins though.

Either are much nicer than Once.
Oh and how!  But I'm talking spiritual beauty...
The quantity of Jews and the size of the frum community is incomparable.

What major US Jewish community would you compare Once too in terms of niceness? What about Jardins?

I for one, can't think of any fair comparison, that would do justice.
But I'd love to see what others can come up with!

Neither exists, SA is very different than NA in every possible way.

First of all everyone lives in apartments in BA and SP so it's not really comparable at all.
But if you made me think Compton for Once and Hancock Park for Jardins.  Though the Once area is on the upswing and I wouldn't let my wife walk alone at night in either.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Apartments? Really? I guess it's a cultural thing like in Israel. I looked at Jardim on street view and it looked like large houses. Maybe I got the wrong neighborhood.

Comparing Once to Compton is interesting. I hope it's not too unsafe.

There is a hotel in once called the Abasto hotel which is decent if you want to be near the Frum community. We got hosted for all the meals and were so happy we did it that way.

I have a friend with a sister who lives in BA so he helped me out with that. Took a lot of work sorting it all out but in the end we were taken care of. The Abasto hotel was pretty nice for what it was location wise, they are very Shabbos friendly and many other frum ppl were staying there as well. They also offer kosher breakfast and all.

The have a pretty cool website. It is right across the street from the Kosher Mcdonalds, which is open motzei shabbos. The hotel is a bit dated but still nice. After a lot of research and debating about the various options we were very happy we chose it for Shabbos

Here is the end of my Amazon trip report.

Here is the 2nd part it's a continuation. http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=2164.msg404773#msg404773

We got to Manaus at around 10 am and got back to the hotel Chez le Rois that we stayed at before out trip into the jungle. All our stuff were still there. The owner asked us what we wanted to do and I told him I want to check out the harbor where they bring in all the bannanas etc from the Amazon. He offered to drive us. On the way he showed us a really cool beach on the Amazon and gave us a city tour. We were driving for about an hour as he took us out of the way to show us all the sights. He then took us to the harbor and walked around with us for another hour. We then wanted to see the meeting of the waters where the Amazon river and the Rio Negor meet. They are 2 different colors and go on side by side for miles.

He drove us to another harbor which was closer to the meeting of the waters and negotiated us a good price for a private charter. He was with us for the entire morning and refused to take a penny!! We got into the boat and within minutes got to see the coolest sight. 2 rivers with different colors going side by side and not mixing. After that, the captain drove us to this whole community that lives on floating houses on the Amazon. They have shops a school and houses. All floating!! Was really cool. He then brought us back to the port and we took a cab back to the hotel where we chilled until dinner. Dinner was a lavish affair at the local Chabad house prepared in our honor. I cannot describe how nice the Shaliach and his wife were to us. They had cooked all our food for our trip into the Amazon and now they made us this amazing dinner. We then went back to the hotel and the next day flew to Panama from Manaus to see the canal and from there we went to Port of Spain for day and then flew home!!

Great TR and thanks, what months of the year is best to visit the Amazon?.

Pleasure.

High season is their winter when it rains less, so July and August are the best months to go. It will also be less hot although that is a very relative term apparantely.

How many days do you need? I think you said two in the Amazon. Then one to get on and one to get out? So Sunday to Wednesday? Or you need another day?

If you get in on a Sunday to the Amazon in the morning, you can do 2 nights there and come back Tuesday morning. If you go in later on Sunday then I would probably stay till late Tuesday or Wednesday morning. It depends on how deep you go into the Amazon. We only went about an hour boat ride in but some lodges are much further. Keep in mind that it's extremely humid and hot so you don't want to spend to much time out there!

I don't know anything about the miles, but the visa is reciprocal. Brazilians also need one to visit the United States.

The visa thing is such a pain. We went down to Manhattan in person to apply and then again to pick it up. They charge it because we charge them. Now that I have the visa I need to go back within the next 10 (now 9) years.  :)

So it's like Argentina, good for 10 years? Convenient.
