Public transportation is not cheaper than a 15 min ride with no tolls.
You can listen to a shiur, etc. It's not like we're talking about an hour drive. You should all really try a short commute. It's really something else.
I have a 7-minutes bike ride, 1.5 miles. I'd take that over a bus/train and day.

As long as you have free/easy parking, then of course you're better off driving up to 15 minutes. How is this even an argument?
You can have free/easy parking and tons of traffic making a 15 minute commute a lot longer.

My commute is 7 minutes without traffic or 9-13 minutes in rush hour, there's no way even the best public transport could beat that.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

But you drive, so you have rush hour. Biking doesn't have rush hour.

It is a matter of preference, not an argument about facts. And parking availability does make a difference.

However, I think I have it best. I walk to my office, most of my kids walk to school!
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

+1

As long as weather is nice and as long as there's a decent place to park the bike.

How far do you work from home (distance)? How often can/do you bike ride?

may as well consider cost of owning car as well in both instances. anther plus of a good public commute is u only need one car for the family (less lease/insurance costs).

+1000. Plenty of people dont get a second car unless they have many children and want both a van and a car for convenience sake.

+100

having commuted both ways I much prefer public transportation besides the fact that its cheaper, I can eat, sleep be on my phone... I'd never be able to do these things driving in

Also +1000.

Side note is that the train (lirr) from queens on a friday afternoon takes the same 17 minutes as usual, while taking a car takes over an hour. (Driving to north pa, thru the city. Had one person drive his car and park it for work, and everyone else came in later on the train).
I'm not who you think I am.

Lol. Its actually very true. I've gotten to the city faster than traffic on a bike somedays.

That's more of a concern in a city where parking is a massive hassle and insurance is sky-high.
In a city with 2 car attached garages, plenty of parking everywhere, and $12/month car (liability+comprehensive collison) insurance it's much less of a concern...

I car pool an 1:05 hours each way. Its better than a bus because it's more flexible/comfortable etc. OTH I still don't have the privacy of driving by myself. - driving with the same guys everyday single day is getting annoying ...

$12 a month?! I'm moving :) it costs me 11 times that amount and it's considered a very good price

Honestly, if not for family, it boggles my mind why someone would choose to live in NYC. Nice to visit, but it's financial and lifestyle insanity.

For your average yeshiva guy that isnt a "professional", I would say (no facts to back this up) its hard to find a job that can support a frum lifestyle.
