Not at all. I believe that the lower cost of living is accurately accounted for by the lower salaries.

I am saying that in my personal experience, living in central/South NJ, the actual job market is dismal to non existent.

I'm not sure how good the job market is in Cleveland though. It is probably much better than Lakewood.. I do have a buddy working in my firm's Cleveland office. - His office is around 200 ppl, while our NYC office employs a few thousand.

As far as corporate jobs in Cleveland, I hear it is more manufacturing/industrial. IE Less white collar jobs than in major financial cities like NY.
Eta.
Upon further review it appears that there are indeed plenty of solid jobs available in CLE, with a painless commute to frum areas..

I absolutely abhor the direction Lakewood is going in, - for the chinuch of my kids, insane cost of living, out of control materialisem, back breaking commute to the city for decent jobs etc etc etc.
I would seriously consider moving... but it's a non starter. - Wife will not even consider move away from family.

Oh well.

I doubt you'll get many responses in this thread. Most people have not thought about this. There are four basic reasons people live where they do.
1.this is where they always lived and never gave any thought to where I want to live (how most decisions in life are made)
2. I would never leave Brooklyn-it's smelly, overcrowded, loud and there are no gas and trees.
3. My wife would never live outside of walking distance from her mother-it might force her to grow up.
4. This is where my job is
See #3...
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

...out of control materialisem,

Unfortunately, which "frum community" doesn't suffer of that problem?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

There's a lot more pressure to drive a fancy car on the coasts than in the midwest.

I don't feel any such pressure. I think the materialsm/self-centeredism problem runs much deeper (and IMHO is counter to what Yiddishkeit is about).

In any OOT community it's not nearly as big an issue.

Depends on the community. I know in LA there's definitely that pressure.

I would bring quotes from up thread, but I will allow you to look for yourself about how many times the argument for nicer houses, backyards, etc. are being made in favor of OOT living. It might be more subtle, but I think it is based in (or is a budding of) materialism.

Meh, the problem is you dont have the drive to move. If you would, she'd be on board within a few weeks of you banging into her all the pluses of moving.

There are some American enclaves there...

There is no way you can compare Lakewood to Cleveland.

Cars are just the tip of the iceberg.
It's designer baby clothing, custom wigs, homes, supermarkets, restaurants etc. etc. - these are just examples, it's a culture problem. And it is definitely better in the Midwest fwiu.

Depends on the community. I know in LA there's definitely that pressure.

I think that in LA, once they hit their 30's, the bulk of the budget goes to rent ($3K+/month) and tuition ($4K+/month) that if they need 2 cars in their family, then most families stop caring what car/minivan they drive. It's more about function and paying the basic rent & tuition bills each month.
