I once had a car driven for me from LA>NY. Maybe $5 in tolls till we hit PA then another $100 or so…

Pretty sure his scenario includes/highlights congestion pricing, which wouldn't have been around presumably in your story. You'd have to try really hard to concoct a decent routing LA>NY that breaks $100 without congestion pricing, and even then it wouldn't be majority NY/NJ tolls.

Lincoln tunnel to BBT and it was hitting you with congestion for the bit of street driving from the Lincoln tunnel to the West Side Highway? If that's what it was, that's kinda the point. Keep through traffic off city streets as much as possible. GWB>highway along east or west side>BBT is $21 with EZpass.
