Hello people. I just read this thread for the first time so allow me to spill some fresh thoughts and first impressions.
This thread's general vibe is that -
New York sucks
Why live In Town if you can chill outa town?
Although levels of Yiddeshkiet and spiritual growth are certainly important, other factors such as eateries, weather, drive time and traffic are just as important.
So let me real quick burst some bubbles.
Yes, New York has many disadvantages such as traffic, tickets yada yada yada BUT first off, a billion times more Jews of all types live here than there, so we can theorize all day every day if its because no one cared to get away from Ellis Island or that they hate it but its the only place on G-d's green earth that has jobs, but you cant argue with the facts. Many more frum Jews live in New York than anywhere else in the USA. (In other news, a billion times more people are moving here than anywhere. Every community is expanding insanely. So it can not be that everyone hates it. And by the way, out of towners move in ALL THE TIME and very often THEY LOVE IT.)
Again, there are pluses to outta town, but there is no place in Chutz Laaretz with as much Torah, Yeshivos, Tzidaka and plain old God blessed Klal Yisroel as New York (will throw New Jersey and Connecticut a bone - Tri State). We bust out more talmeidi chachamim and community activists than anywhere else.
When listing the various important qualifications for a good community, why not put Judaism related issues first, cost of living and crime second and all other narishkeit third? Talk about people having their heads on straight!
And another point. Reading through this thread it seems like the mid west guys have a chip on their shoulder.
Hey Dan! You are a great guy, but why the hate? Pitt sucks, LA is horrid etc. Look, if Beachwood is truly the Garden of Eden why are you so interested in other communities? You're vibe screams GET ME OUTTA HERE.
You also have this hang up on how evil folks with fancy cars are. I cant help but laugh. You described yourself in a different post as "migusham", you fly all over the world and live it up in insane hotels. Yes yes, its all free miles, but guess what TIME IS MONEY. So you are paying for all of this with expensive money. I mean time and effort. Oh, its what you enjoy? O.K. these folk like nice cars.
I am not saying that you do not have a point, you do, but you make it like the worst thing in the world by far is living paycheck to paycheck and driving an Acura. I know you drive an Altima but chill.
Now I know that some people will accuse me of being mean but people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. The hating New York attitude is gross and probably a little bit of envy since they get all the excitement and shabbos table shmoozing. Some Ahavas Yisroel on your part may have an effect on the wicked New York folk who are obviously all stuck up, never say good shabbos when they pass each other on the street (Oh G-d, that's worse than chillul shabbos) and drive acuras. Oh, I forgot, they also chill in fancy hotels.
