Good points here. Not referring to people who have family there, it’s understandable why you’d want to stay. But I just don’t get why people would move there from NY or different out-of-town community.

Your point about the weather is wrong. This year was absolutely brutal, worse than the worst winters in NY. For a month straight the high temp was like 10.
What makes you think people are flocking to Chicago?

I would say the biggest pros over NYC is it's not as crowded and housing is a lot cheaper. (far and away the biggest cons of NY)

I think maybe you're being a bit overly dramatic?
I've had Pizza at a couple of places, I don't remember it being particularly terrible. And I seem to remember having some really good stuff from North Shore, although I can't comment on their overall quality.

“Not as crowded and housing is a lot cheaper.” Both are true. But if that’s why you’re moving there, just move to Detroit, Dallas, etc.

Not being dramatic about the pizza, it’s that bad. North Shore as well.  Tel Aviv is okay at best.

Ton of people I know have moved there from NY, but maybe that’s not the norm? I don’t know, I feel like the community has grown tremendously over the last decade, but could be wrong here.

Have they said why?

Please explain how Dallas and Detroit are better than Chicago?

You might be right as we have a good number of Chicago people in Denver, just for that fact that the weather is SO much better here (as many sunny days as San Diego here, and here it snows and melts the next day) BUT a BIG plus Chicago has over any of the other OOT communities you listed is the number and quality of their schools. Because it’s such a close flight and they have good reputations we have the whole spectrum of Modern Orthodox, Yeshivish and Chabad boys going to different high schools there. Also, housing is very cheap there compared to New York for the Jewish infrastructure available. It’s cheaper there now than Denver.

Should've moved to Chicago before the east coasters came in and ruined it. Used to be a much better place.

I feel like this is a sentiment found across the midwest as we're getting discovered. Only going to get worse though.

Huh?
For big Jewish concentration (living in same area) what percentage of the total would Chicago be? Would it be behind NYC, more than CLE?

Not sure this exists for religious populations though.
Thanks and that is what I was asking. There are Jews living in my community. I don't think they moved here because of the Jewish concentration say in Skokie.

I think this is a trend that will only continue in the frum world as young families find more and more that NY isn't for them either because of costs (housing and tuition relative to job costs) and or hashkafa/communal politics. 20-25 years ago people were leaving Brooklyn for Lakewood, Teaneck, Passaic. Now their kids are leaving Lakewood, Teaneck and Passaic for Houston, South Florida, and Cleveland.

Funny how everyone is raving about Chicago.. The weather is literally the worst i have even experienced (I lived there for a couple years) Super cold windy winters, and humid hot summers.
I have yet to meet someone who moved to Chicago without having some relatives and/or a special reason to move there.. There are def options to move to outside the NY area, but Chicago would likely be at the bottom of my list.

No offense to peeps from Chicago, just trying to figure out who is pushing this agenda :)

The guy who started the Chicago discussion was AGREEING with you, saying he lives there but the weather is horrible and he can't figure out why people DO move there vs. other cities.  ;D
If someone can stomach the weather there (I can't and I also couldn't in Cleveland) Chicago is in a unique price point for a solid and established Jewish community where housing is cheap, and it seems like you still get a friendly, OOT feel.  Cleveland seems to be catching up though in infrastructure and is still has even cheaper housing and also tuition vouchers.
