The guy who started the Chicago discussion was AGREEING with you, saying he lives there but the weather is horrible and he can't figure out why people DO move there vs. other cities.  ;D
If someone can stomach the weather there (I can't and I also couldn't in Cleveland) Chicago is in a unique price point for a solid and established Jewish community where housing is cheap, and it seems like you still get a friendly, OOT feel.  Cleveland seems to be catching up though in infrastructure and is still has even cheaper housing and also tuition vouchers.

I guess i missed that part :)

No offense to peeps from Chicago, just trying to figure out who is pushing this agenda :)
The people who are not so shallow that they allow restaurants to determine the city they live in? Don't think anybody was pushing Chicago here, but definitely people defending the guy talking smack. Chicago is probably one of the largest Jewish communities that actually has a sense of community. It's not 1000 different little developments. There was a great "pro" to that, but it's disappearing with the people who have been moving in.

I was wondering whether I was the only one befuddled by adults seeming to make pizza a factor in where the would choose to live.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

If pizza was the factor no one would live in NY.  :P

To me, Chicago's only con is the weather. I'm content with the kosher seen. Very happy with the Chinuch (chabad) available. Decent housing prices. Nice community.

Meh, you can find parts of cities, that may not be that bad, but that you wouldn't want to live in, in almost every city out there.
Also, you can carry a gun here, not so easy in NY.

Still a lot more crime than most other midsize Jewish communities.
Higher taxes/ultra-liberal governance.
Probably the worst weather of any large Jewish community in the world.

But saying the restaurants are a con for a midsize city is silly.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Not disagreeing with any of that. Just making the point that while "chiraq" makes the news, it's not happening at the same volume in most of the Jewish areas.

What is wrong with Chicago weather for anyone that isn't a snowflake? We have all four seasons.

Nuclear waste contamination. Land taxes as high or higher than Monsey.

I was responding to a post in the Trips/Destinations thread where someone asked specifically about the pizza in Chicago. I copy/pasted that post here. Yes, the kosher food in Chicago sucks, but in no way should that ever be a factor in choosing where to live. I agree with you there.

I stand by initial statement, though. Can’t understand why anyone would want to live in Chicago besides being near family: terrible weather, lots of crime, high taxes, etc.

Can we here more about the infrastructure in Denver. Which cities have strong jewish presence?

Never answered this.  We have two lower day schools, one is Co-ed very modern Orthodox, called Denver Academy of Torah.  Many of the families with kids there are more let's say traditional than orthodox but a big range (like most OOT schools), with about 150 kids TOTAL in K-12 (HS is very small, about 30 kids in all four grade).  We have a more right wing school called Hillel Academy of Denver (I put the names because Hillel is usually the left wing school in a city). :)  Hillel probably gets about half its about 250 kids (in K-8) from families in some form of Klei Kodesh of all different kinds.  About a quarter of the kids are Chabad (mostly children of the many shluchim here), and the rest are a mixture of Yeshivish (families from the actual Yeshiva, Bais Yaacov, Kollel, Aish),  Baal HaBaatim, the growing Bucharian community, etc.  We have an excellent Bais Yaacov that gets girls from through out the west and even dorming from Mexico and Central America.  Because of a partnership with the University of Colorado, many of the girls leave as college juniors, just from their BY classes.  The boys yeshiva also has a dorm and is a solid school for certain kind of boy but it is a Lakewood Yeshiva where the boys generally need to dorm (even in-town boys), daily night seder till 10PM, etc.  The majority of girls from Hillel (Lubavitch included) continue in the local Bais Yaakov and the majority of boys do go to the Yeshiva here although a significant number also go away to Chabad, Chofetz Chaim and other types of Yeshivas.

Food is total OOT, with only one Pizza shop (but it is actually good) and a market with a sit-down, solid meat restaurant attached.  We also have meat and cheese at Costco and Trader Joe's.  It's definitely an OOT community although with established and stable schools and populations.  Mostly because of housing prices and a lack of high school options, our community is not growing exponentially like some other places.  It's an amazing quality of life, with great weather, skiing about an hour away (from Nov-May), beautiful outdoors, etc. if it fits with your hashkafa and school needs.

Are they still fighting with the city over the rapid expansion of Jewish Communities there?

Funny how everyone is raving about Chicago.. The weather is literally the worst i have even experienced (I lived there for a couple years) Super cold windy winters, and humid hot summers.
I have yet to meet someone who moved to Chicago without having some relatives and/or a special reason to move there.. There are def options to move to outside the NY area, but Chicago would likely be at the bottom of my list.

No offense to peeps from Chicago, just trying to figure out who is pushing this agenda :)

Same can be said about Baltimore's weather, restaurants, and taxation. Yet there are more important factors.
