(American Israeli) Friend of mine has a pizza store. He opened a new branch, and hired an agent to get him his initial stock of ingredients. When he shows up for the opening, he was surprised to see a 5kg bag of sesame seeds he didn't ask for. The agent explained, "I saw you forgot to put sesame seeds on your list, so I got you some."

Instead of savory cubed potatoes, they drown them in some kind of a sweet sauce (also most kosher Israeli pizza is sweet and inedible). I guess the sesame seeds are there because they think of it as some kind of sweet and sour Asian dish.

Home fries here is not home fries in the states. Someone seems to have given them the impression that it is supposed to be drowned in sweet chili sauce. The good places are a bit more subtle with the flavor and added veggies, but the chili sauce is always there. Just a different product with the wrong name.

Try offering a NYer a pie from anywhere else in the country...

There was a store near the mir that was making pies with a savory suace... but gave in to what actually sells, and changed the sauce to a sweet one.
Yes, you'll never confuse a Pizza uri pie with one fron ave J, or JII here with Perazio, or Pizza Shemesh/Extra Pizza with Cafe Napoli on M (Z"L) but they're all tasty and decent. (OK, except for PS/EP  )

In general I find that Israelis have a tendency to like things much sweeter, and no appreciation for proper food flavors. The amount of sweetener (be it sugar or otherwise) that they put in their beverages is mind boggling. Even water or seltzer is commonly flavored.

I would expect you to know by now what value I place on that word/adjective. Even if it were under a השגחה I would trust, JLM isn't the entire country. Some people actually go to Israel without setting foot in JLM the entire time they are there...
