It sounds like you havent been around enough. Maybe the local frenchies near the Jewish community are like that but not throughout the rest of MTL.

+1 The jewish community is like a ghetto and you can get around just fine but out of it its horrible and from what i hear; out of MTL is even worse.

you could literally be a millionaire just by being poor....

Anyone want to copy my format in the OP for a place like MIA?
Where the community is, school, shuls, cost of living, crime, how the state makes up for having no income tax, etc.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I lived there 2.5 years and couldnt stand the frenchies. FOr a while I was a salesman dealing with mom and pop shops, half couldnt talk to me and the rest just wouldnt out of pride... not a good combo to be a successful salesman.
The job market in MTL is horrible.

The only Pro that I found with MTL was that nobody mixed into my business. I did what I wanted, dressed how I wanted etc... and never felt uncomfortable.
+1. Unfortunately the only way to make a living in mtl is if you own a business

From having lived in several out of town communities (DTW,CLE,and now CVG) I'll say that from my point of view the main reason people don't move from NY to out of town is the lack of good jobs. Putting aside that in general Detroit and Cleveland don't have the greatest economy's which results in unemployment problems, from my experience there is also a lack of frum owned business's that can provide a solid salary, as well as a lack of connections in the professional world that help people get good jobs.

In contrast in the NY area there are so many frum people working professionally that it is easier to get a job via connections, and there are many frum companies that will hire even without a degree or other requirements that would be needed to even be considered for a job with a non frum company.

True. Very well stated.

Not sure what you want to know. I live "down the road" from Columbus, from what I know it's a pretty small but close knit community. i believe there is a kollel there and 3 shuls. If you want more info I could put you in touch with someone there.

The job market in MTL is horrible.

While it's true that I haven't lived in MTL for very long and I haven't experiened the job market here, I have come into contact with "real" frenchies and I do have some perspective on general things about MTL.

As a student there is nowhere better to live (if you can get resident status). Tuition is dirt cheap and if you have kids, the govt. pays you to attend school! As a student I have come into contact with many Francophones, and have generally found them to be pleasant and helpful. The Jewish community is great, there are a ton of kosher restaurants, grocery stores, shuls etc. While the price of goods is higher due to import taxes it is easily offset by the various govt benefits that are given.
Yeah, but the social programs there... nothing beats it.
you could literally be a millionaire just by being poor....

Unfortunately, ppl dolive off of abuse the programs, however if used properly, where else can a mother of 3 go back to school and become a nurse ($7/day for daycare) or a father of 5 earn their BS (~30k+/yr just for going to school) after getting laid off?

G-D help you if you ever need the ER CH"V.

Eh, it's bad but have you ever waited in the ER in the USA? It's not much fun either. The ER's are (relatively) similar... The difficulty is found more for scheduling procedures, there is a lack of doctor hours (plenty of doctors, they are just deinsentivized from working long hours) and top notch medical machinery. Of course the good ol' USA is heading in that direction, thank you #POTUS.

Having lived half my life in CLE and half in NYC, I wouldn't be able to live without the conveniences of NYC.
