-The Corruptness (including the requirements by some Jewish Agencies to be a registered voter to                            receive assistance, and oh btw if you registered republican don't bother applying for assistance with us)

Huh? Really? Would you mind to name one?
I dont believe it.
Especially your last comment about republicans.

After getting today a $115 parking ticket, just for dropping something off by my in-laws (took around 60 seconds), I'm considering....
And while we speak, does SP give 2X points for paying a parking ticket?
Love me or hate me. I still love you.

So, as an ex-New Yorker

Pros:
-Huge frum community
-Kosher stores, restaurants etc.. all over the place
-Communities, Shuls & Schools to fit any Hashkafa
-Pomegranate
-Basil (Best Kosher Dairy place in the US in my opinion)
-mass transit system
-Lots of activities / attractions

Cons;
-High crime Neighborhoods
-traffic
-parking & alternate side parking
-Tickets are part of the annual if not monthly budget
-High cost of living
-Tuition
-The Corruptness (including the requirements by some Jewish Agencies to be a registered voter to                            receive assistance, and oh btw if you registered republican don't bother applying for assistance with us)
-People are rude, you don't know your neighbors, etc...
-the need to "keep up with the Jones"
-high taxes
-Cold weather, black snow in the winter. Humidity in the summer

Sorry to all you New Yorkers for knocking your city, I did wait to see if a current New Yorker would write this first ;-)

Cons?

its getting over populated -
traffic

to be quiet honest i was always very bad with this part of the argument when growing up - i love monsey so not so good at the con part sorry :-(

see when i grew up - i thought it was a good thing i didnt have to feel the pressure to wear boss underwear (far out ex not to insukt anyone)
and i  liked it that eateries werent in my backyard but rather id bike to these places
i liked it that i had a driveway i got to play basketball all the time
i likesd it that i have a big property
i like the quiet at night and day

so i dont pay tuition YET but i def know its cheaper than bmg and darchei so i know that con isnt as bad in monsey

Not going to name them but suffice to say that in order to get camp scholarships that was what friends of mine were told.
Also the Musaf (mem vav samach fey. Medicaid, wic, food stamps, section 8) scams going on. Including swiping your food stamps cards at certain stores and being given cash.

pomegranate a plus? :o have u seen gourmet glatt(a whole lot nicer than pomegranate and even cheaper at times than KRM)
the only thing i see in pomegranate, is that if u tell a some wealthy people that it cost more, u make them feel that that they're elite-basically pay more for nothing
all in all you're correct for the most part I've spent the better part of 3 years trying to like where i live and at best ive gotten used to it (the reason i currently live here is for job purposes. but at least i got the wife in agreement that whwen a job comes along out of town for her or for me, the other will actively seek a job there and we'll be able to buy a house cash (or almost)

The Pros And Cons Of Where You Live
« Reply #151 on: January 13, 2013, 08:00:02 PM »
You have to break down NYC.
I live in far rockaway.
Pros
Easy parking

Job market is good even without a degree/experience.

Very good mid range eateries

Spacious

No one cares what his neighbour is doing

Decent amount of minyanim.(Compare to OOT)

Cons
To go anywhere in the tri state area could take up to 4 hours with traffic

Rent is expensive.

They don't have a real minyan factory. (Compare to brooklyn)

Your next to lawrence.

I don't have any kids so I can't tell you about tuition but for the first couple years of marriage this is the general picture.

"Your next to lawrence. " LOL :)

Another con is crime if you take the subway to Mott avenue. It is not to pretty at night.

ETA- took the bus one night because subway was broken and I saw a person punch the bus driver in the face and then shatter the rear view mirror with another punch. Bus driver said someone call the cops, but I opted not to #onlywhiteguyonthebus ;)

interestiong how many of the cons (and pros for that matter) are very subjective. I doubt anyone in Lawrence would say this

This is my opinion. Some people couldn't care less about minyanim.
Some don't care about restaurants.

I personally don't like to be near lawrence. I think a lot of them are very stuck up people (I work in lawrence). I'm not saying there aren't not stuck up people but I would not want my kids to be around or hang out in lawrence neighbourhood especially when it comes to tzinius I feel that they missed the boat.
These are things that I take into factor.
For someone else it could be a whole different picture.

meir u happen to be very right, and i agree with you, but you have to realize the negative is more viewd here, i know plenty of frum ppl in lawrence who are yeshiva-lite (tznius and the works). BUT i too would most likely never move near that particular same reason, because even though there is positive frum ppl there, but what we all see is the negative!

to me this is an issue very applicable in the five towns in general, (including parts of queens  ;)

when looking to move to a place, what are the main considerations to take into account? sure alot of minyanim, 5 grocery stores etc are great, eateries are ncie as well but it's more of a luxury and not a necessity. I'ts not why we move to a place. (IMO) I'm assuming it's about jobs, money, expenses, chinuch, safety, affordable housing, and community.

here's my list so far of questions i would need answers for, please critique and feel free to add things i should think about. I'm Chabad, so somethings are not pertinent to all people but it may make a diff to me.

Expenses
income tax (1099/W2)
Gas
Health Insurance
Housing (buying)
Housing (rent)
Food
(are there options for food stamps or other government help)
Chinuch
(are there breaks for teachers/small income and what)

Community:
Safety
Unity (one rabbi, central shul, or many shuls, no authority)
Proper Chinuch, full school or only certain grades
Modern/religious trend
Young or old neighborhood (social reasons)

I have a small business that is mobile so jobs is not an issue (BH) for me, but obviously that's a major player.

The places i'm currently looking at are
Cleveland - Saw Dans write up, very imformative!
Pittsburgh - Have access to info, but would appreciate any input!
Baltimore
North Miami Beach
Los angeles (or driving distance from the schools there, would live in a shlichus community with a commute)

any other places I should consider?

my main reason for wanting to move: is to get away from the city life, where it's all about competition, and who has what etc, there is no unity in CH, and therefore no proper chinuch, hectic life and very expensive. I'm not looking for people to convince me out of my opinion nor am I imposing it onto others. this is just the way I feel

What am I looking for: Affordable housing, a bit of more quiet, some younger families (20+) for a social life (that they should be interested in growing in yiddishkeit) good chinuch (or at least better than CH)
Feel free to PM me if you have info and would like to talk :)

Disclaimer: This post was not meant to be controversial in any way, it's just my opinion and interests.

Full is $8K-$11K at HAC, discounts are given for multiple children and based on income of course.
I know of people making low 6 figures with 4 kids who get a nice break but of course you'll have to share your 1040 and negotiate I'm sure.

any concrete numbers?

any discounts if you or wife teach in the school?
