people come to shul in cle on shabbos packing heat?  ???(i only know one person who always packs heat but thats because he is a chaplain you probably know who im talking about though  ::)

In my city people come to shul with their concealed weapons as well.  And I'm sure more do that I don't know about.
Though IMO not enough.  I think it would be smart to have at least one in every shul.

You don't think in nearly every shul in Israel there's someone packing heat?
In Brooklyn or Chicago probably not because it's too hard to get a concealed carry license.

I think it would be smart to have at least one in every shul.

Might change this summer.

True, and that is regardless of the safety of the city. There are crazies everywhere. And possible terrorist I suppose.

Sometimes we do stupid things to protect the ones we love.

I look at it like swimming in the ocean. I'm not scared when I go swimming in the ocean. I don't swim in fear. But I am very aware of how powerful and dangerous it can be at any time and take necessary precautions and avoid doing stupid things.

Everyone likes to believe where they live is safe. Perception is not reality.

Safety obviously isn't everything. Just ask all the resident Machalites about their next door neighbors.

As an LA native and current resident, I'll try my best to give the pros and cons:

Pros:
-THE WEATHER  8)
-Amazing kosher restaurant scene
-Large Jewish community (many schools, shuls, kosher food options, events, etc)
-Equidistant from HI, AK, and NY (all about 5.5 hour flight)
-Friendly Jewish communities (they might be big, but each community is close and friendly in nature unlike NYC)
-Lots of job opportunities
-Lots of parking (all houses and apartments have driveways for at least 2 cars (1 for some smaller apartments)
-Very health-conscious city (in terms of eating and exercising)
-Lots of natural scenery/activities (including mountains, deserts, vallies, beaches)
-Lots of big-city amenities: LA philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, sports teams (no NFL yet), lots of museums, theaters, performing arts, etc.
-The ability to be near snow (1.5 hours from the city) but not having to deal with it on a daily basis during the winter)
-Large, spacious freeways (only a pro during non-traffic hours)
-Multiple ways to get places (a pro during high traffic hours)
-Plenty of CVSs with VRs

Cons:
-TRAFFIC
-Expensive housing (a one bedroom apartments start at $1100/valley, $1300/city; houses are about $950k for 3 bedroom)
-Expensive cost of living (tuition, gas, insurance, etc)
-Far from East Coast, Europe, Israel (almost all deals are from JFK :( )
-Not drivable to almost any large cities besides SAN, LAS, SFO
-Parking: Street cleaning (not officially called alternate side, but same deal)
Permit parking on some streets (a pain for guests)
