Not sure if you count those as pros or cons  ;)

Very true.
And the billboards, xxx stores, ads, and the way people dress leads to kids that are typically far from innocent.

True.  However, in the day-to-day living one doesn't notice the billboards/ads and visit/drive by/see xxx stores.

As for the way people dress...In the winter, people here freeze when it hits 65º so they're all bundled up.  The summers are not as hot (and not at all humid) as most of the country so more pritzus on the east coast.

That said, I agree hollywood definitely has an affect on everyone to some extent.

As an out of towner just driving down a main thoroughfare I saw a number of billboards and xxx stores that I wouldn't want my kid to grow up seeing.

And in March with temps in the low 70s people were dressed pretty scantily. And I'm talking about both people off the street and frum people.  Surely you'll admit that standards are very relaxed on the west coast.

And the fancy cars that are so prevalent, even among people who complain about being broke is something I'll never comprehend.

Maybe I'm just a too-sheltered Midwesterner though.

I'm so thankful I grew up in a smaller Midwest town. More and more each day.

Was ironic to see the chabad yeshiva in LA tell all of the "in-towners" that they weren't invited back for the following year when I was there.

Some billboards are inappropriate, but if you live here you stop noticing them after a while.  I lived in Milwaukee while in yeshiva for 7 years (no billboards) and when I came back to LA it was a shock seeing all the billboards.

I agree that people are a lot more relaxed on the West Coast than elsewhere in the country when it comes to frumness/tznius.  People might dress scantily in the 70s, but in Milwaukee if it hit 40º in March people were running in shorts and t-shirts too.

One of the big problems facing the community here is the high cost of tuition.  I agree that way too many people spend all their money on stuff (cars/houses) and then need financial aid to pay the schools.  I don't know if this issue exists elsewhere (ie Brooklyn) but I assume it does.

Anyway, the good weather doesn't come free; we have to pay for it somehow.

People dress way more trashy at 80 degrees in areas of  FL and CA than they do at the same 80 degrees in the Midwest. IMO.

I think that's because people are skinnier in CA and FL than in the Midwest so they want to show off more.

The people are skinnier BECAUSE there is more pressure to be able to wear all those clothes. Plus they have better weather. Either way. It doesn't matter why. It matters that it is.

Without a doubt.

How much is tuition?

Really ought to be simple if I were running the school. Drive an Acura/BMW/Caddy/Inifiniti/Lexus/Mercedes, etc=pay full tuition regardless of what you earn.

Day schools are around $18k from what I hear (I don't have kids yet).

They did open a high school that has lower tuition (around $8k) but it is far from an ideal school.

Wow, add that to the cons.
There are high schools in NY that charge 15-20k tuition but I never heard a elementry school charge that much.

I could be off.  As I said, I don't have kids yet.  I know high school is definitely around there.

Maybe someone else can confirm elementary school prices.
