I think I meant to say Israel, let me check.

Too much talk about LA/MIA/NY/NJ/CLE etc

Broaden your horizons. Think about the Holy Land. Huge Mitzvah? check.

Get to hear kohen's priestly blessing daily (or duchin if you are a kohen)? check.

Get to visit kosel, miaras hamachpeila, kever rachel, gravesites of thousands of great men? Check.

Can choose from a wide variety of communities, including American olim, so that the fit is right? Check

Yes there are challenges, I can run through a whole list of them, but the Holy Land is nikne biyisurin.

Nothing beats Israel ever.

One of my main reasons for having such a hard time deciding to live in Israel is the lack of finding a community where I feel as though I belong. Not that I'm at the place where I'd want to move right now anyways but it's always on my mind.
I love Israel.

Anyone have anything to add about Houston?

There is really very little info that I found earlier in the thread.

Is there a Chabad community out there or just modern orthodox?

I know there is a Chabad school but is it a "shaliach" school or for the frum community?

Any other general info would be greatly appreciated!

Houston makes Florida look like a joke. It's unreal. I will repeat that. It's poshut unreal. I've been there twice in Tammuz. Once I even went there straight from Venezuela and I still felt that way.

Thanks guys for the weather comments but that info is readily available online.

I know there are cons to living there.
Otherwise most of the NY and LA communities probably would've been transplanted.

I am trying out to find out more info specifically about the community and so on.

If anyone can share anything in that department it would be greatly appreciated!

Houston has the nicest and friendliest community you'll probably ever find. Southern hospitality is a real thing.
The Chabad school is mixed till either 3rd or 4th grade.
Part of the vast right wing conspiracy.

I don't know where in LA you live but I am guessing you pay 3 or 4k a month in rent for a place that is too small for your growing family.

In Houston, you can buy a 4 br house with a pool for $180k. You could get an FHA loan and with one month of LA rent, put down a down payment and even with PMI pay a mortgage that would look more like a car payment.

Dallas a growing community. I can't see why you'd prefer Houston over that (unless you have issues w Barto).

Cost of living is definitely extremely low. And you still have the benefit of being in a major city. That being said savings compared to Miami are pretty small.

Don't know who or what "bar to" is but my understanding is that Dallas is litvish and/or modern orthodox. I really am looking for a Chabad community

Houston is not a chabad "community." It's a dozen families, many of whom have adult children who got married to other Lubavitchers and decided to stay in Houston. But don't confuse that with an anash community. There is ONE shul for anash. The rest of the "nusach ari" minyanim in the city are all Chabad Houses for mekurovim.

are you saying that one shul is a Chabad house type shul or is it an "anash" shul ? I knew its not an LA/NY community but is it really only a dozen or so Chabad families ?
