You would probably be right if your package was the only package they had to deliver, being that that's probably not the case I'm assuming this way makes more sense.

Has to do with their hubs. They process everything through there so sending something from New York to New Jersey via Memphis is often cheaper and quicker

I believe they are making money on shipping its simple mail that they are loosing on. Since there are less letters being sent , shipping is something they are usually cheaper ..., they prob have that figured out pretty well

I suspect something is messed up on the label. (might even be barcode or zip is wrong)

USPS does not work that way but UPS does.

Update
Package made it's way  back to Trenton, and was finally delivered, why couldn't they do that the first time?
