That right there is the big problem in this country. why doesnt meshuganer want to work? it seems ( correct me if I am wrong) that he is happy to live off the government. food stamps and other need based programs are there to support those who cant, not those who dont want to!

Do you earn money? do you have any desire to earn money?

I simply dont see the problem of taking advantage of these programs when the govt grants them anyway.
You well know that the national debt wont be seriously reduced if I stop taking these programs.

On a different note, it's interesting that the USDA chose to give residents of NY 50% back, while NJ wasn't initially approved, and even now is only eligable for 30%. Some towns in NJ are completely devestated, and even where not, people lost power for a week or are still out of power, and had to throw out their fridge/freezer items.

The 47% are not necessarily pro-Obama. In theory im a republican, and I'm a registered republican.
but as i said in the above post: they give it anyway. you dont reduce the deficit by not enjoying it.

I have a student friend who make no real income and who has student loans for his $60K/year tuition for dental school and who's wife is a stay at home mom and they refuse to take WIC or other handouts.

I have immense respect for them and he's able to respect himself when he looks in the mirror.

In some states handouts will not be given to people that are full time students. You will not be eligible. WIC not included as that has nothing to do with amount of income.

But then again you have to be realistic. If you can't pay your bills and you don't have support its extremely hard to make ends meet.
I think you have to gedarim (boundaries) when to take and when not to. Its like everything in life you have to find a middle road.

Fair enough. Take if you need it, but be very wary of it becoming a crutch/excuse as that often becomes self-fulfilling.

I don't necessarily agree with your friend. When so much money that would have otherwise been used in the private market is funneled to the government, you lose out again by not taking what would have been your money that you would have earned.

Additionally, because of the amount of money they pump into food and housing, we end up paying more for them. Take section 8 for example, if you remove all of it from Brooklyn the price of housing will plummet to the actual market value.

If some people were as zealous as they are chasing down every government dollar they would also be able to find a job or spend the energy going back to school or learning a trade.
